I'm having the same problem. Opera 53.0, Mac OS X 10.13.5.
Network is fine, every other browser works fine.

You can still enable an swf application to open (run) in the browser if you go to Settings, search for Flash and select Allow sites to run Flash.
Opera opens two windows if not running and a link in another app is clicked

@eisenheim forgot to mention that you should also have enabled setting 'automatically send crash reports to Opera' in opera:settings. In either case could you check if you got any .dmp files inside any subfolder in <profile>/Crash Reports directory?

@thunderclutch I believe this is related to allowing Opera to handle mailto: links on for example gmail. i think there's something wrong here but I'm not yet sure what exactly 🙂

But just for clarity for others passing by: you do not need an extension to share links via mail in Opera on Mac, you can use the Share menu for this which is a system facility.
