Thank you for your replies guys. Good ideas.

I'm running a few scripts and extensions; the ones working on Gmail are Gmelius, Rapportive and μBlock. I tried disabling them (or running it in a private window - great suggestion!) and it seemed like things were a bit better, but barely.

Then I disabled the sidebar (which was only running a bookmarks and history extensions) and - wow, that made a difference! Strange... Disabling Rapportive also seemed to help. Still keeping Gmelius....

I found a work-around that would probably help with other Google apps that don't work right with Opera. Apparently, Google deliberately makes it difficult for some apps to work with Opera since they want to force Opera (i.e. Google Chrome variant) users to switch to Chrome. (How nice of them!). I found a user-agent switcher add-on for Opera that is similar to the old Opera option that allowed Opera to be seen as another browser.

This add-on installs a toolbar button (similar to what ad-block does) that allows you to set Opera to mimic a wide variety of browsers. I added it to Opera Stable, opened Google Drive, and got the pop-up about using an unsupported browser, but was able to click on the X to close the pop-up, after which Google Drive looked fine!!

It's all very well putting things like this in but surely it's common sense to let us turn them off if we don't want to see them.

I find it intrusive and I don't want it.

I have no idea what you mean by trying a new profile.

Go to Menu > About Opera and take note of the path to your profile folder. Then close Opera and rename that folder to force the creation of a new profile.

Open Opera and check if it helped. If not, just deelete this new folder and rename back the old one.

Btw, do you use any extensions? Hava you tried with them disabled?

panel (sidebar) is active in developer and beta...when stable enters v30 (I think) it will be active by default too
for now there is a flag in stable to enable it opera://flags/#extension-sidebar
but you can't search for extensions on opera addons page...they are invisible to stable, only with direct link to particular extension
Downloaded and installed Flash Player, but it still didn't work.

Thanks I found pepperflashplugin-nonfree in the software manager, installed it and it all works OK.

Which site uses them for anything beyond cross-site tracking? I have disabled them the moment I realized they were permitted and had zero problems.
I can't think of a situation where a site would really need them.

Well, if you don't use any major site (Google, facebook, Yahoo and so on) then disabling third part cookies won't really make much difference.

I found solution :
you must remove the extension of the binary (.exe) in the definition of the URL schema (in the registry).
this will break any problem on any browser except opera 😞

Thanks both. Neither worked I'm afraid. I reset all flags to default first. No change. I left them all at default and added the command line instruction and still no change. If I use IE Tab to get the same page the dropdown works OK.

Turbo compresses data at an Opera server to make it lighter for a user that either have a physically slow connection or a traffic limit.
When your speed is decent, it won't make a difference. If you're on a rather high speed connection, it might even take extra time to push your data back'n'forth.
The video click-to-play condition is default with Turbo because such content takes on your bandwidth rather unchangeably. The feature compresses images and some other stuff, but I doubt it could take on a streaming content.
