@pclaudel1 I always download the installer files from the same official source and I did it at once after it was uploaded by Opera (29th of September). My Windows Defender is always switched on and I also scanned the file manually again after I read this thread some hours ago. No alarm, no problems, no virus. And no changes in the browser, as Foxiebro usually does. It would be easy for me to remove Opera, because it's installed as standalone version on my computer.

@kened I'm very grateful. I would have gone about it much differently and would probably have made a mess of it!

@kened said in Opera 73.0.3827.0 developer update:

What is strange is that Opera never makes this type of update (download .dlls).

You have only the single .dll installer in Temp directory?

@ziegensatan Interesting. On the basis of your experience, I just switched Defender off and turned Malwarebytes Premium on and downloaded 73.0.3827.0. No alarms, no problems. Windows Security continues to report that my system is secure.

I just hope that Windows Defender is wrong and Malwarebytes is right about the .dll file not being Foxiebro.

@andrew84 When Windows Defender accused that those dlls were infected, I removed them. When opening Opera Developer, he downloaded them again.

@kened strange is that I have a bunch of the .dll in Temp directory but most recent is from 2018. I'm updating Dev build regularly, every week.

@kened Most probably it was just a false positive like all the similar alerts that came before that one.

When only one antivirus detects the threat, it's probably a false positive.

@kened The DLLs are part of the installer.

@leocg Yes. Windows Defender probably prevented the installation of these dlls at the time of installing Opera Developer; then later he tried to download the dlls again.

@craigsn I used a 'thorough' uninstaller, which uninstalls and looks for leftover folders / files and allow deletion of them as well- the one I used is Revo Uninstaller, the free edition.

Just to check, switched to the regular release version of Opera - which did not throw up the Foxiebro issue.

@ralf-brinkmann It was from the 'update and recovery' option of the Opera Dev version.

As I have mentioned in another post, there was no issue with the regular release version.

@kened Good point. When there are so many posts on the forum about this issue - even if it indeed is a false positive a quick and reassuring response from a moderator / admin / dev team member would be appropriate.

                                          Thanks to the Opera team.

                                          • it is a browser that I have been using for many years (from when there was some detail on the Opera web site / blog about the small town where the Opera software development work was happening - in those days)

But, when there is an issue like this, a formal / official response in a day or two would be welcome.

I switched to cunning animal at the begging of the year, however didn't completely give up on Opera. In the recent months I've switched backed to Opera and have used it concurrently with a certain cyan-iconed browser that recently switched to chromium. I steel feel like Opera is the true browser because I've used it as my primary(probably the first) since I'd started using the Internet, however I just can't get past by recent shenanigans...
