I definitely recognise what you mean, but we must keep in mind that the users come from all over the world with different cultures and etiquettes. What they may consider normal, could be considered rude to you and vice versa.

Also in case you start a discussion but no one answers, it's a way to check if it's read it or not.

The old Opera forums had the view count and it was very useful for this reason. It was also useful in general just to know the activity.
