Where is "file, open" in Opera?

hucker last edited by Dec 22, 2022, 7:51 AMI wanted to open a local webpage, but there seems to be no "file, open" mechanism in Opera! I see "page, save as" so where is "page, open"?

There isn't an option in the menu as far as I know. You can drag n drop to Opera or just hit ctrl + o (which is what I often do if I don't want to drag n drop).

@burnout426 Ouch, CTRL-O? I'd never heard of that, even though I've used computers since 1982. I've used CTRL-S to save and CTRL-P to print, but never actually had the need to use an O!
I'll never remember that, anyway what I was needing it for failed miserably. When I dragged a heic image file into Opera it tried to save it. I tried your CTRL-O and it also tried to save the very file I was opening! Not very useful.
So I guess Opera still doesn't like HEIC files yet, the thing invented in 2017.... 5 years ago! Is it true Apple charge stupid money for copyright on that thing, so virtually no programs use it? And when does Jpeg XL come out? Both are half the size and better quality.

Chromium recently decided to drop all work on it, so it's not going to support it.

@burnout426 If it becomes the standard like jpeg, Opera will have to support it, or it won't display any single webpage.

@hucker When and if that happens, most probably Chromium will start supporting the format.

@leocg Well as it is I can't see photos from my friends Iphone. Why doesn't Opera do HEIC? I know, I know, it's a non-standard Apple thing, but there are a lot of clueless Apple users....
P.S. What's in your icon? Is that a shadow of someone taking a photo?

@hucker Most probably the demand for such image format is not enough considerable for browsers to support it

Uh.... every single Iphone is producing them. There's a lot of Iphones.

The "Open" option can be found under the "File" menu and is used to open a new webpage or file in the browser.

@hucker Nope, it's not. As Opera, Chrome,. edge and 9 out of 10 browsers have been demonstrating in the last decade at least.

Just because they get it wrong doesn't mean you have to. Go check out a word processor, a photo editor, etc. How else do you open a file? It's the most basic operation. What if I wanted to check a local copy of a web page I was creating?

@hucker Different softwares for different purposes. In a browser such menu is not necessary.

It is necessary, as I said, for opening a local copy of a page. They always used to have it, but as is the way with modern computing, they remove the useful stuff and add pointless gimmicks. The sales department is in charge instead of the programmers. Just look at the mess Windows made of it's perfect start menu and taskbar. Windows 8 onwards and it was destroyed. By default, my Windows 11 start menu contains absolutely zero apps I ever use, and 20 adverts. I had to use a 3rd party fix to put it back to Windows 7 style.

@hucker 9 out of 10 users don't keep opening local HTML files so often that demands a menu to open files in a browser.

@leocg So you don't cater for 10%? That's like not serving vegetarian meals.
There are many things in menus most people don't use. Just look in a photo editor. Yet they're there. Why the dumbing down? It's not a mobile phone where you need to save space. -

@hucker In that specific situation, the need of a open files menu, no, I don't care.
Those who really need to open files in a browser know how to do it without needing a specific menu for that.
