@burnout426: Ok, nevermind. It's because I disabled hw acceleration since I keep getting blinking black screens all the time.

@burnout426: I get a blinking screen sometimes and then the whole browser just turns white until I completely restart it. Happens on RTX 3080 and on a laptop without a dedicated GPU. Unfortunately, not exactly usable themes.

@max1c Ah, makes sense. I assume you tried setting the "Choose ANGLE graphics backend" flag at the URL opera://flags/#use-angle to "opengl" when hardware acceleration is on to see if that fixes your issue?

In previous version i could set my daily changing desktop wallpaper as my background in opera.
            Not seeing that anymore.

            Why was this feature removed?

If not removed, where is it now?

After a long time, I wanted to update my Opera and give it another try, but my classic problem continues: I can't watch Twitter and Instagram videos. I don't have this problem in other chromium-based browsers on my system, but I can't figure out why I have it in Opera. It seems like I'll close Opera again now and wait for the next version. 🙂

*It's a bit strange that it's impossible to select wallpaper when predefined theme is selected. I think it should be possible after the 'Animated' toggle is disabled.

*Another one thing I noticed is that tiles on your screenshot have the semitransparent light background. But here it's dark background.
                2024-10-23_223629.png

*and I think that the search box should be also semitransparent while not focused.

@burnout426: Yes, OpenGL fixes the blinking. But these themes don't work at all with OpenGL. Everything is just white.

For me the annoying thing is that the Midsommar and Aurora Theme does not have the animation or the background, maybe they use opengl and not vulkan?

@andres85961234 What animation are you talking about? Here, Aurora has animation.

@leocg: On my device the animation and background Midsommar and Aurora don't work, they stay blank.

@max1c When you have hardware acceleration on and have the Angle flag set to "opengl", what does opera://gpu say? Is it showing everything is hardware-accelerated or does it say it's using software? If the latter, that would explain why it really doesn't work any better than having hardware acceleration off. If the former, it might be a bug in Opera or your GPU drivers. Not sure. Nvidia + hardware acceleration + opengl is usally the ticket to getting everything working perfectly, but...

@KeivMS Click the Easy Setup button. If you already have the classic theme selected, hover over it and click the edit button. If you don't have it selected yet, click "theme gallery" and choose the classic theme.

In the properties of the classic theme, there should be wallpapers lister there where you can pic your desktop as the wallpaper.

Does that work and it's just not animated or does that not work at all?

The most welcome news and feature from this update has to be that Opera R2 will continue supporting Manifest V2 extensions beyond the June 2025 cut off date. That is great news!!!

@max1c: Have you tried setting opera://flags/#use-angle to "D3D9". I found I have less display issues when I set it to that.

@daria19: Great post about how Opera handles the Chromium updates. I always find it interesting how quickly users criticize Opera for not being on the latest Chromium version, without realizing it takes work on your end in ensure it doesn't totally break things by rolling it out too quickly. I know based on previous posts on this same topic that Opera will also prioritize pushing Chromium updates out as quickly as possible when major security issues are involved. I applaud the work you and Opera are doing considering how complex web browser are.

@burnout426 I doubt this has anything to do with Opera specifically. Pretty confident this is a Chromium issue that has been there for a while. Just tried again: 0c53e301-0d5a-49c9-afab-af172b765054-image.png

As you can see the whole browser is white with OpenGL.

@lancealot But it leaves the question: Are we open to exploitations because of the unfixed security holes? Shouldn‘t there at least be some backports in due time? I don’t see that really been done.

@healingcross316: Actually I see the opposite, when they update Chromium in a Opera release it is not always the latest Chromium version, which means they are backporting the security fixes into a older version which they had more time to test. They have said before themselves they backport fixes, and mention such instances from time to time (https://blogs.opera.com/security/2024/08/update-your-browser-security-fixes-for-latest-chrome-zero-day-cve-2024-7971/). It takes time for the upstream fixes to make it into all the Chromium based browsers, even for a big company like Microsoft and their Edge browser (I read their changelogs so I see the lag). If your really worried about being open to exploitation then you probably shouldn't be on the Internet since I can tell you no software is 100% secure, and there are always exploitations waiting to be discovered. The point is Opera does roll out security fixes as soon as possible based on needing to test for reliability, it is not like they are ignoring them completely as your insinuating.
