      @gmiazga:

      How is it disabled?:
** If I go to Opera.com and try to download the Windows version is gives me the 102 Setup
** If I go to https://get.geo.opera.com/pub/opera/desktop/ it still lists 102 as available

In my case I always go to the offline installer directory (firewall doesn't allow me to do online install), and today I saw 102 there. So naturally I downloaded and installed it, and BAM -- all of my info gone!!
Luckily I was able to fix it this way:

      1. Uninstall Opera 102 through Windows "programs and features". When you do this make sure "delete all data" is not checked.
      2. Download Opera 101 through the offline site above.
      3. Restart Opera -- all fixed!

Very bad of Opera to put 102 out there as Stable with this major issue. Then to post on these boards that it has been removed when it's still there for download ....

@sklunk As said, they disabled the auto-update to version 102 until they create a fix for the profile migration issue.

I am not talking about auto-update (that does not work for me anyway since I am behind a firewall).
I am talking about 102 still being downloaded through the offline directory or even right from the link on the Opera homepage. If people don't know to read these forums first you end up thinking 102 is "stable" and installing it anyway!

@sklunk Maybe it's not a generalized problem that justifies pulling out the release.

@sklunk: I agree with you that the upgrade process is faulty and it is the right choice to make it unavailable. However very few people perform the manual upgrade. I think Opera has left the manual download available for new users since this particular issue is not present with clean installations.

                Thank you very very much!
This got back my quick speed dials, extensions and multiple settings.
I broke out in a sweat when I realised what was going on! 😃

@sklunk my system doesn't give me the option to retain my data when uninstalling. Is it possible to restore sessions and tabs from the sessions folder? Or is there any other way? I don't want to uninstall Opera 102 only to find that all of my data is gone.

@sklunk one more thing. Can I have two instances of Opera running, that is install 101 before uninstalling 102? For those of us not at the high end of tech savvy it would be helpful to have more information. (Yes, I have my PC plugged in & turned on LOL)

@burnout426 on my PC, there is no CertificateRevocation or Opera_shutdown_ms.txt in the Opera Stable directory, which I hope are not critical files (they don't look like it). However, it looks like most of the files you list are in the Default folder. I'm not sure what this means. Also, I don't see a Cache or System Cache in any of the Opera-related folders.

I'm wary of the deletion you suggest. As you can tell, while I'm a long-time Opera user, I'm by no means an expert, and I find the instructions in this thread confusing. Is there no simpler way to roll back the changes? Something like this should be in a recovery option. I have been able to restore tabs and tab islands before, when accidentally closing a multi-tab instance before a single-tab one, but this "upgrade" is a total shambles.

I won't be able to work on it any more for a while, but I hope that by the time I get back in somebody will have found a simpler fix.

Opera probably just copies them all even though not needed. No worries.

Download Opera Developer and install it. Click "options" in the installer and make sure to uncheck "Make Opera default browser". When that Opera is installed and launches, close it. Then, look at its "Opera Developer" profile folder. Same with its "Opera Developer" cache folder.

You'll then see where things should go without extra copies. You can then uninstall Opera Developer if you want.

                        CertificateRevocation or Opera_shutdown_ms.txt

Also, I don't see a Cache or System Cache

No worries. They'll show up eventually.

                        No problem.

Compared to one of he methods in this post?

@burnout426 thanks. When I next have a chance I will try your suggestions. Maybe not for a few days, but I'll try to get there.

I hope Opera developers are taking note of this fiasco and it won't happen again.

That may be a good explanation. Like I said I am behind a firewall so I always have to use the offline installer so I never worry about auto-update anyway.

Unfortunately I don't know the answer to either of your questions. Maybe somebody else can chime in ....

Hi, is there a possibility to add a checkbox inside preferences so I can have the "Other bookmarks" folder in the right side of the bookmark bar? Just like Chrome or Edge have? Thanks.

@simonov-89 migration to 102.0 profile copies files and nothing is deleted. So downgrade work, so does copying all files from root profile dir to Defaults folder inside profile also works.

@gmiazga I did, yeah. But you do realize that many users do not sit on forums, do not understand computers well? It's a major problem.

@simonov-89 that's why update is fully disabled.

Stable builds are rolled out gradually, usually on first day only users who update manually get new version. So generally those that download build from opera.com and install it or those that visit opera:about page to trigger update.

Issue with migration didn't affect all users and we are still not sure what triggers such situation. We haven't been able to reproduce it internally.

@gmiazga: Perhaps the length of time it takes to complete the upgrade is a clue. I was tempted to manually restart Opera after it closed during the upgrade. I suspect if I manually launched Opera during the process it would have left me with nothing. I have hundred of open tabs with tab islands, etc. Perhaps test with a similar configuration and then launch Opera in the middle of the upgrade.

PS. I am on Windows 11 Enterprise, 16GB RAM, 250GB NVME SSD, CrowdStrike antimalware.

@paul-durham thanks, that's what we suspect. Migration should be atomic operation so it shouldn't be possible to start Opera while it wasn't finished. We are currently trying to reproduce it with fake profile with size around 100GB. Working also on some other solution for profile migration.

@gmiazga if it's any help to you, Opera opened unexpectedly, with the blank profile, when I was trying to open another program (WordWeb Pro) which wanted to send me to its update site. Normally, this would open my existing Opera profile, but this time I got the singing O and the blank profile. I may have been caught in the middle on this one. Still need a good fix though.
