I agree! Keep the Tab Menu, please! It's ingenious! It's especially helpful in FullScreen Mode!
I prefer Opera over other browsers for the following reasons:
-seems lighter on resources and a bit more responsive/quick than even Chrome, Firefox, and Vivaldi
-best tab preview of any browser - I can check on the tab/page's content simply by hovering over the tab
-full-screen is truly full-screen and allows me access to both open tabs and closed tabs very nicely via Ctrl-M; I can also access Facebook Messenger easily while in full-screen mode by Ctrl-Shift-M.
-keyboard shortcuts for extensions work in full-screen mode perfectly (unlike Vivaldi); Firefox has no keyboard shortcuts for extensions
-does not tap-out my laptop battery as quickly as other browsers
-Instant Search (Alt-Space) works terrifically and is a great way to access bookmarks even in full-screen mode
-customizable keyboard shortcuts (not quite as good as Vivaldi in this respect, but still very good)
-built-in snapshot (Ctrl-Shift-5) is very nice
-speed dial is better and snappier than other browsers
-Personal News integration with AI news/categories is innovative and creative and intriguing
-Facebook Messenger in the pinned sidebar is very nice; I like it better than Vivaldi's implementation. Other browsers simply don't have it. (request: Twitter in this sidebar would be heavenly!)
-address bar input seems to predict what I am looking for better than other browsers
-it is more appealing to the eyes than other browsers. I like the bright wallpapers in Light mode very much.
-MyFlow with Opera Touch on phone is excellent
-neat little features other browsers do not have like tap on tab to take you to top of page/tap again to take you back to where you were on the page
-neat little features like mouse gestures that work and don't overwhelm with too many choices
-the best tab management of any browser I've found to be able to simply go back and forth between two tabs quickly and easily. I use Ctrl-tab for this.
-built-in ad-blocking capability (I assume this is more resource efficient than relying on extensions for this)
-neat little features other browsers do not have like the ability to close a tab with Alt-mouseclick
-neat little features other browsers do not have like the ability to select multiple tabs and then right-click them to copy all their page addresses (URL's)
-neat little features like the ability to select multiple tabs and then right-click them to save them all to a Speed Dial folder

@LORDQ It was removed.
Yeah ... oh, boy ... he knows that already ... the question in the title of the thread is "Why?"
I really like Opera on the desktop. It's my preferred browser. I have an iPhone and would really like to try out this new mobile browser that is only available on Android at the moment.
From what I read here and elsewhere, OperaMini is a total failure from insufferable/inappropriate images and unwanted and non-customizable newsfeeds.
I want to be an Opera-fan on mobile, too.
Any updates or news about its availability will be appreciated. Thank you in advance.
One workaround that I've used off-and-on is simply to do this: open the Bookmarks tab by pressing Ctrl-Shift-B or the appropriate sidebar icon
This takes one click just as clicking the New Tab (+) button in the tab bar.
Either way, your Bookmarks are readily available to choose from. I prefer the Bookmarks tab over a new page with speed dials if I want to access any number of bookmarks that are not in my speed dial page because now I can type in a search for the appropriate bookmark at this point, also.
There are certain bookmarks that I access most simply by typing the first few letters of the url for it; almost always what I'm searching for comes up immediately.
All that said, if Opera offered the same behavior as the requestor/starter of this thread said, it would be a welcome addition to Opera.
Carry on.

I heavily dislike the removal of the Tab menu and its substitution.
If this function is confusing for people, please add it via advanced options for power users.
I heartily agree!
Please hear our plea!
The Tab Menu is necessary!
I ask this sincerely!
Let this feature be!
The lack of transparency or forthrightness about this is rather stunning. I would think Opera would have someone dedicated to responding to these things or other issues/complaints in a direct manner if public relations and retaining users means something. Opera could hire me if they wanted to for these sorts of things. I like the browser on Windows very much, and would be willing to help Opera and its users come to a meeting point where confusion or disappointment could be alleviated or explained in an honest and understanding manner.

@treego You need a libffmpeg.so that's based on Chromium 107 that also only requires Glibc 2.31 or whatever you have (
ldd --version
to find out) .Most versions of libffmpeg.so now require 2.35, but https://github.com/Ld-Hagen/fix-opera-linux-ffmpeg-widevine/releases/tag/nwjs-ffmpeg-0.70.1 might not. You can test to find out. Or, you can wait till vivaldi-snapshot moves to Chromium 107 and try its libffmpeg as mentioned here. I'm not sure what version of Glibc it requires.
Or, you might have to update ChromeOS. I see https://groups.google.com/a/chromium.org/g/chromium-os-dev/c/NEK8h6HVV1s, but I don't know the current status of things.
Thank you @burnout426 !!!
I have regretfully decided to switch browsers for now ... I am getting too old to be messing around with all these files to maintain Opera on my system. Thank you for responding, though. Perhaps, it will help someone else, too.
Bon voyage, Opera. We had a good run.
@dunjineer You can turn off Facebook Messenger in the sidebar. Right-click on the Sidebar and click on it to disable it. The sidebar is very flexible in terms of what you want enabled or disabled -- at the bottom of the sidebar is an icon to click to do all sorts of adjusting of the sidebar to suit your fancy.
You can also hide the sidebar altogether and you should be fine that way, too.
Peace, sir or ma'am!
@Teadrinker76 Vivaldi has a superior Instant Search -- press F2 in Vivaldi and find out! They call it Quick Command -- it's far superior actually to Opera's previous Instant Search.
One more advantage I see with Opera over some other browsers is the very nice layout for extensions:
-Enabled
-Disabled
-Updates
-Under Development
It has helped me locate one or more extensions in the past more quickly than I would have located them without such a nice breakdown.

DNA-84410 [Win/Lin] Replace Tab Menu functionality with Search in Open Tabs
So you removed the only feature I used Opera for? nice
Please don't rid Opera of it's brilliant Tab Menu ... oh, it is so special in FullScreen Mode!
@burnout426 Thank you for the confirmation! Hopefully, this a fairly easy fix for Opera.
@opera-singer said in Instant search box gone?:
@treego I wouldn't say far superior. It certainly displays more options, but you cannot display the results of a search within that window. It has to open a new window, unless I am mistaken. Thus, the key part of instant search isn't really there.
Fair point ... Vivaldi opens the search result in a new "tab" as opposed to a new "window," though.
@coffeelover Thank you. If Opera would like to employ me doing that sort of thing, they can contact me anytime! I prefer to work from home, though.
While I am here, let me add another reason why I prefer Opera over other browsers:
Opera has built-in Cryptocurrency Mining Protection and Malware Blocking
Other browsers force one to research/search for such protection via extensions. I know Opera has got me covered for this already, so it is one less headache/concern for me. I have enough headaches/concerns, already.
@leocg said in Opera 68 is here with built-in Instagram in the sidebar:
@alexs And you do that often enough to justify having the list of closed tabs that close?
If he/she took the time to post about it here, it is quite obvious that he/she thinks that list is important ... can we be nice?
When people express their opinion about Instant Search being removed and the Tabs Menu being removed and how much they miss it, it is something that is significant to them. Otherwise, they would not bother posting here.
Pressing people as though such removals of features should not be important to them at all is counter-friendly and hardly helps Opera's image here in Opera Forums.
That's my 2 cents ... carry on!
@leocg Say it ain't so! That's not the way to go! Come on, Big O! Don't let Tab Menu go!
Another innovative and addictive feature that only Opera has is its unique ability to create a popup bubble on selected text to easily copy or search or MyFlow ... I believe this popup bubble will do conversions of different sorts, also (i.e., money conversions, units of measurement conversions)
