Multiple instances have made Opera unusable

Hi all.
I originally downloaded Opera, having been an avid Firefox user, for the exact reason I stopped using Firefox. That is, so many instances of Opera running in the background. Last count there were 18 or so. I don't understand why so many? I have no extensions running so why so many?
I have no problems on my mobile version, but the PC version is just a nightmare. The very reason I moved to Opera, over a year or so ago, was because it was super fast. Now it's super slow! I now think I'm going to have to go back to Firefox. I tried Microsoft Edge but that's not too fast either.Any way I can stop Opera loading so many instances of itself?
Thanks.

@marcus4471 As said before in the other dozen of topics abou the same subject, this is how Chromium works.
You can open Opera's task manager to see what are those running processes.
