@nicohane It's not you or your shortcuts; it's the most recent Opera version that has this bug. It's going to be fixed in the next update, afaik. For now, I suggest you get used to pressing Tab when opening a new tab with the "+" button, as that will focus the address bar.

Same problem here. I even created a topic for this issue before seeing this one. Sorry Opera admins. Hope you delete that topic before going online.
Anyway, this problem is annoying and it's not the first time it happened. It almost make me wish to try blocking any future updates. -

Win7 x64
This problem appeared after the latest update 55.0.2994.56, the previous 55.something was fine.
Normal course of action used to be:
- open new tab
- start typing in the address or search word
- open the desired site
Now it is:
- open new tab
- start typing in the address or search word (nothing happens)
- grab the mouse and click on the address field (if I press Tab it activates the search field, not the address field)
- repeat #2
- open the desired site
I never imagined something small like this could be quite so annoying.

Hey guys! Since the latest update, the address bar isn't active after I press CTRL+T to open a new tab.
After opening a new tab, I type some stuff and then look up at the screen to see it didn't appear, so I have to click (or press tab) to activate the bar and type again.
Could you put the cursor back into the address bar after opening a new tab?

After the last update to 55.0.2994.56 (Kubuntu 18.04), there is no focus inside address bar if I am opening a new tab, clicking on the plus icon, however, there is focus inside address bar if I am opening a new tab using keyboard shortcut (Ctrl + T).

Same here. Seriously annoying. Almost went back to chrome just because of this stupid bug.

Folks, no need to repeat it again and again. Please read this thread carefully and you will see that Opera confirmed it is the bug which will be resolved in the next release. End of story.

I moved from Beta to Stable channel just to avoid annoying bugs like this, yet here I am again.

No build was released after the one with the bug

I have a feeling that before, in older versions, when opening a new bar, you could enter the new address or word to search.
I see that in the version I'm using this does not happen. (55.0.2994.56).
If not, please put it.
Hugs the Opera team.

I have the same bug with the cursor not focusing the adress bar automatically.

Why wait for the next stable update, when you can roll out the fix before aggravating even more users and THEN work on "important" updates.

Because there are other ways to open a new tab, so there's no need to rush the release just to fix that problem.

I understand why it isn't considered an urgent priority, however, I also want to register the fact that because I am so used to this behaviour, I keep typing my searches into the void and it is driving me up the wall.
