Well, not only we have unwanted bookmark bar entries appearing every now and then but also speed dial entries.
Today booking.com miraculously (and unwanted, of course) appeared in my speed dial (again).
Well, Opera, this is really, really annoying.

@deestonic I confirm, this is very frustrating! If you can't figure out why Opera has a single digit market percentage - now you know why!

I got booking.com added to my Speed Dial page today, also. I don't sweat it, though--I just delete it. This is one way that Opera is able to produce revenue and finance the production/maintenance of a terrific browser. Happy Independence Day to all my American patriots today! We are free--free to delete unwanted speed dial buttons and bookmarks--free to do even more important things, too!

Yes, same here right now. it's humiliating. Shame on Opera. I'm sick of this!

One of the other threads about this from a few months ago had a reply from an Opera employee. They said "This is definitely not intended behaviour." (copy/pasted quote).

Even if you clear it out of the bookmarks trash bin, it still reappears. It showed up for me again today.

Opera: This is not helping Booking.com in any way. You’re generating negative brand value. Please explain that to your client.

@sbora Very interesting, but that quote is hard to believe; it (bookmarks being added without user's consent) is happening. Perhaps, that "employee" is not an employee or is out-of-the-loop with the marketing department? Very interesting quote, though.

Today booking.com was added to my speed dial entries as well, unwanted, once again:

Opera was running, while this happened, no web page was opened, and I was absent for a few hours. My computer is malware-free.

I do like Opera, but in the meantime I become a litte bit disappointed.

The lack of transparency or forthrightness about this is rather stunning. I would think Opera would have someone dedicated to responding to these things or other issues/complaints in a direct manner if public relations and retaining users means something. Opera could hire me if they wanted to for these sorts of things. I like the browser on Windows very much, and would be willing to help Opera and its users come to a meeting point where confusion or disappointment could be alleviated or explained in an honest and understanding manner.

The lack of transparency concerns me, indeed.

As I wrote: Opera was idle, not in use, when booking.com was added. Opera was NOT just started. And it was NOT updated just before.

So what makes me extremely worried is that I don't know what exactly triggered this addition. Who or what reviewed my speed dial entries, concluding that booking.com would have to be re-added?

And how often does this interaction of data between my speed dials and the speed dials someone thinks I should have occur?

@yanta Auto-update is not used only to update Opera itself. It can be used to update extensions, ad-block lists and so on.

I must admit that I do not fully understand how that Auto-update is functioning:

Does it compare my Speed dial entries with an online list maybe several times a day, even if the core application itself is up to date (my version is 54.0.2952.41, update stream: Stable), and on this basis default speed dial entries may be re-added?

@leocg Is that all Opera staff have to say in this topic? I guess they just wait until all of us will calm down and get over it just before new ad will appear again.

Aw, c'mon, man! Auto-update MUST NOT update my "extensions, ad-block lists and so on" since i'm not using Opera's ad-blocker.
Every extension i use has its own auto-update.
Also, we saw too many times how Opera disables or completely removes some or all of extensions or bookmarks.

@yanta I don't any comparation is done, I guess it just updates some files that then add the speed dial entry.

How come Opera on the homepage says it's "free", same thing on Wikipedia it says it uses Freeware licence while clearly this all means it is adware!

Technically, adware is something different - or else by your definition Firefox is also adware.

I just updated Opera from v54.0.2952.41 to v54.0.2952.46:

booking.com was re-added to my speed dials.

                                            It must be love... 🙂

                                            Giving up...
