Why can opera not import its own bookmarks?!

I had a disk corruption. I have a fresh install of windows. Fresh install of Opera. Why is it so hard to get my bookmarks back? I found the file on the old disk d:\users\peter\appdata\roaming\opera software\opera stable\bookmarks but when I copy it to the same location on c:, opera still sees no bookmarks.
And seriously? When I try to import, it can only import from other browsers and not it's own file?!

Copying the "Bookmarks" file over used to work exactly like you'd expect. However, at some point it was changed to where the bookmarks in the file are considered to be from a different Opera/device where you need to goto the URL
opera://bookmarks
to find them and move them to where you want.Another option is to take that Bookmarks file and use https://rongjiecomputer.github.io/chrome/bookmark-recovery/#windows to convert it to an HTML file and then import it at the URL
opera://settings/importData
by choosing "Bookmarks HTML file" in the drop-down. You should then find the bookmarks in an imported folder on the bookmarks bar. You can then goto the URLopera://bookmarks
and move them to where you want.
