I agree. They're still screwing up what was once a great android browser. I'm staying with Opera 43 since I not only hate the "suggestions" but also the download ui and the disappearing speed dial folder labels when 'large icons' is checked.
If you use the Quit option from the menu, Opera asks if you want to clear history and cookies. If you don't Quit, Opera keeps running in the background and can periodically display notifications (if you haven't turned them off).
Aside from the "AdAway workaround" - I am really confused that nobody dislikes all the advertisements in Opera now.
The last version used to be ad-free, plain, content-focused - and now this? Speed Dial / News has ads every where, reading mode has an ads on the bottom - this should not happen when the ad blocker is enabled.
I would even pay for an ad-free version - how about that, Opera? 😉
