Ruining this command from Terminal blocks the AutoUpdate.
defaults write com.operasoftware.Opera OPDisableAutoUpdate true
About why the latest update broke the start up, I don't know.

You should try with a clean install or wait for the next update (despite that it's not assuring to fix the problem.)

From the menu or sidebar go to Extensions. You'll see buttons for Disable and Options, and there is also an "x" over on the right hand side to remove the extension (but only when you are hovering the listing for an extension does the "x" appear).

Since is not happening on FireFox will not be a 🐁 dust / switch problem.

I don't own a Mac to test it but you could try from:

defaults write com.operasoftware.Opera OPDisableAutoUpdate true

to

defaults write com.operasoftware.Opera OPEnableAutoUpdate true

Make sure you checked in Trash - until you empty Trash it still counts as bookmarked.
