Because there are no toolbar customisation options in Opera starting with version 15.
Unfortunately most of the online documentation is still for Opera versions before 15, the latest of which is 12.17 (there was no desktop version 13 or 14).

It fades out when I move the cursor away from the link on my installation.
Occasionally it does seem to stick on when I first load a page, but it disappears if I left click anywhere on the page that isn't a link.

Huge arrow and black spot? Are you certain that is not a setting in your mouse (if you're using a mouse)? I don't see this.
Yes I'm certain.
Checking "for mouse wheel clicks" and immediately a rather big arrow appears after a mid-click pointing to the direction of the mouse movement. Increasing the movement (= increasing speed) additionally a black spot appears in a distance to the arrow proportional to the speed.
Here's a screenshot but the black spot (about the same diameter as the arrow) seems not to be "screenshotable" https://copy.com/WjPPeyUM74LiAxN0

Thank you again on helping me to hugely improve my work efficiency and ergonomics.
Now ... there is a strong need in me to finally repeat: this is so unbelievable awesome!! š
It is in the help included with the browser. You can access it by simply pressing F1 or by using the menus (Opera ā Help). Then navigate to Find solutions ā Backup.
Thanks for responding, I was aware of that, but like you said that's not real fix.
I actually don't understand why there's not an option 'empty on exit', like the one in old Opera.
