@darthagnon Any difference if you disable hardware acceleration?

Do you use a firewall (other than Windows firewall)? Some types of firewalls (aka internet security software) are known to block private headers - in the past this resulted in Opera not knowing the file size on downloads. This makes Opera try to download past the end of the file, which of course produces an error. Se if there's a setting about blocking private headers - and if so then turn it off.

No luck - it didn't occur with a real mouse. Anyone have any ideas?

The exact definition what is a context and how it differs from other contexts depends on the applications, and possibly extensions, that define contexts. Most often a context is defined by the selection in the edit view. When the type of selected object changes then the context changes also. That means that if you have text selected in Writer and select a different text portion then the context does not change because in both cases the selection contains text. But if you click on an embedded table or image, the context does change.

Thank you for posting that website; the scrolling issue can be reliably reproduced on that page. The problem is not solved, and still exists in Opera 56. I feel that on some sites that I was visiting, it may have improved slightly, but overall, scrolling is still jerky and unresponsive in Opera as of the latest version of O56. Please visit the posted site sapsalis.gr (Greek meme site or something) and attempt scrolling, pinching-to-zoom, and diagonal and horizontal scrolling using a touchpad on a Windows laptop to reliably reproduce the problem.
