My father with an antiquated computer says Opera takes ages to load. Since I have a fast computer (24 core with NVME), and have way less stuff on the start page, I've always enjoyed it only taking a second or two to load. But it's getting much slower recently. Is there a way to speed it up? Is it trying to access images to display on the start page thumbnails? Can I disable something to make it quick again? The start page opens instantly if I open a new tab, but it's the initial Opera start that's slow. If I close Opera then open it immediately, it's still slow, so nothing to do with disk access (I have an NVME anyway).

Same here. I run Windows 7. Slow loading, especially Speed Dial, began with Opera ver. 86.0.4363.32 and continues with 86.0.4363.50.

Same here. For a few days now the speed dial takes several seconds to load. A fix would be appreciated.

@paulrevere Wow, we're on 86? I thought only Firefox did that nonsense. Have they not heard of decimal places? The first number should be for a major revision.

Not sure what version slowness began with here, but it was within the last month it slowed down.

Still, mustn't grumble - Paintshop Pro takes 30 Seconds to load on the latest machine. And they think that's ok! whatever happened to decent programmers who wrote tight code?

I put Opera Browser assistant back on, that didn't help.

What does that thing do anyway? I can't see any benefit.

                  @paulrevere

                  Fixed!

I went into "C:\Users\peter\AppData\Roaming\Opera Software\Opera Stable" and emptied all the folders marked cache etc, using treesize to find large folders and folders with many files. Starts up in a tenth of the time now. So just the usual bloat programs don't take care of themselves.

Speed Dial takes about 8 seconds to load after the last update. It's not a bad as it was a few years ago when it took over 30 seconds to load after an upgrade bug, but it's definitely related to the last update. I hate it when an automatic update makes things worse!

Update, it's got slow again in one day, clearly a programmer screwup. Can we have the ones that could write a chess program in 16KB in the 80s please? Imagine how fast modern computers could run software written properly like that. Do we still even use compilers or is Opera running in an interpreter?

Sure, programmers are the root of all evil.

About your computer - have you installed any third party security suite or antivirus? If not configured properly, those may seriously affect Opera cache access speed. MS internal one likely isn't that bad.

Then I presume your PC uses SSD drives? (NVME likely indicates that.) If not, then I could recommend plenty of old-school tricks to make them faster.
If yes, then check drives with manufacturer utility - sometimes SSDs go bad (happened to me already twice, on different computers).

Re "Paintshop Pro takes 30 Seconds to load" - strange, I have quite old computer (8 years or so), PSP loads within 5-10 seconds. Well, not the latest version of it.

@donq In 1982, I had a very good chess program in 16KB. In 2022, a mouse driver takes 120MB. This indicates a tremendous inability by programmers.

It's not just my computer, everyone is saying the same thing, Opera slowed down after a certain update (about 2 ago).

Er.... of course I have an SSD. Have you ever seen an NVME mechanical drive?

It's a brand new WD SSD.

Do you have JASC or Corel Paintshop Pro? It went drastically wrong when Corel bought it. And guess what their tech support says? "30 seconds is acceptable on the latest machine and Photoshop is as bad"!

Not here. Or at least I have not noticed - I'm on developer channel and maybe they have already fixed some problems.
You didn't tell about third-party security software?
Fast drive doesn't help, if some software decides to check every disk access against malware.

Then (just few ideas to check) - some extensions may slow down Opera startup either, have you tried disabling them and compare performance?
VPN and Opera sync may affect startup somewhat too - just theoretically, I don't use them and have not got any practical experience.
There are some settings for promotional content - have you enabled them by accident?
Updating speed dial icons and bookmark icons are rumoured to somehow slow down Opera startup too, although this should be done in background and you cannot configure this.

Or greatly relaxed hardware requirements and bloated frameworks.
In 1988 I wrote spectrum analyzer program (including controlling spectrometer and other equipment), taking about same amount of memory (16KB). Because computer had 48KB of RAM, I had no choice - spectra needed room for acquisition and processing too. Today - such software would take maybe about 100MB, but many times less time and effort to create.

Do you have JASC or Corel Paintshop Pro?

Both. JASC one is old-school gem, but Corel has more options.

Only got AVG. Never caused a problem before.

                              Never heard of fast drive.

Extensions didn't change, Opera version did.

Don't use Opera Synch or VPN.

                              Never use promotional whatever.

Not sure what you mean about updating speed dial icons. Surely this is a one off thing.

                              Funny it's called "SPEED dial".

So the point of making computers 1000 times bigger and 1000 times faster was in fact just to make it easier for the programmers? How ridiculous.

The JASC one does everything. Immediately.

                                Agreed, AVG usually doesn't interfere.

                                Never heard of fast drive.

Fast drive = SSD (drive without seek time), be it SATA or NVME variety.

Extensions didn't change, Opera version did.

                                Extensions sometimes update themselves.

At startup, Opera may update speed dial and bookmark icons - like I said, this should be unnoticeable to user.

                                No more ideas then, sorry.

@donq This has happened before after an Opera auto update. As I said previously, the last time it took even longer for the speed dial icons to finally appear. It was corrected with another update, then it worked as it did previously.
This time I started Opera and got the screen that it was updated, then when I went to speed dial, no icons again, then about 8 seconds later, they appeared. This is now the new normal. It seems that other users are experiencing the same issue. I wish there was some way to set it back before the update, and keep it that way. All the updates seem to do is add in a bunch of junk that I don't care about. Now I'm considering other browser options.

@gnezmo It's the same with all programs nowadays, add more features, then fix stuff later, the user is the tester. And nevermind how slow it runs, everyone has supercomputers. Just blame them for having a machine over a year old!

Well, looks like most problems are related to speeddial updates.
This is unfortunately a thing I can't comment on - I have my speed dial cleared totally, nothing to update.

Have you turned the promotion settings off? They may be on by default.

What about updates adding unnecessary junk - I totally agree. Maybe this junk attracts some new users, unfortunately it may alienate some old users.
