I don't want a desktop icon, so i delete the shortcut form the desktop. But every update it is back and I have to delete it again.
How can I prevent the installing of the desktop icon?
Opera Stable, Beta and Developer

every time after the update, Opera creates a shortcut on the desktop and I have to delete it every time. Is this a known issue?
Opera 62.0.3331.72 x32
Windows 7 x32 -

@temkem It is doing the same for me. I suspect, but do not know, that this is due to the installer checking for a shortcut with the name "Opera Browser", but as I have renamed my shortcut simply "Opera" the installer cannot find what it is looking for and so puts a new shortcut on my desktop. Have you also renamed your Opera shortcut?

@garyallan No, I just moved the Opera shortcut to another location - to a folder on the "E" drive

Likewise, then, the installer is not finding what it expects and is installing a new shortcut on your desktop, I suppose. This does not sound like a bug, but they could do what many programs do and ask if you want a shortcut on the desktop.

Has anyone sent a bug report about this problem or should I write it myself?

Generally speaking updates will reinstate whatever options Opera was originally installed with. So if it is possible to install Opera without a desktop icon (and it has been a few years since I looked at the options to see if you could), you would need to uninstall Opera (preferably without removing your settings of course) and then reinstall, making sure to clear the option to create a desktop icon if such option exists. Or perhaps @burnout426 knows of a command-line argument to the installer if the option is not in the GUI.

@sgunhouse I have the same problem and submitted a bug report. I have NEVER had a desktop shortcut installed (I do not like nor use them); however, starting a few weeks ago, Opera updates insist on installing a shortcut onto my pristine desktop.
Tell me how to fix Opera's update bug.
Note: I assume it's a bug because I've been using Opera for over 20 years and it's never done this to me before. It'd be a shame to quit using it for such a lame bug.

Haven't tested, but I'm wondering if you can edit installation_status.json in Opera's program files directory and delete:
"SC_DEST_COMMON_DESKTOP":"C:\\Users\\Public\\Desktop\\Opera Browser.lnk"
from the "shortcuts" object. That might stop updates from creating the shortcut again.

Good idea. Edited that and waiting for next update.Like some other people, I also never enable/install desktop shortcuts and from some time ago Opera started putting it on my (or rather all users) desktop - I consider that a bug.

@burnout426 By default, Opera is installed in the system "For the current user".
Therefore, I find only this way:"SC_DEST_DESKTOP":"C:\\Users\\User_Name\\Desktop\\Браузер Opera.lnk"

Update: Opera updated, icon is back, again on all users desktop. F-word here. I need to find another solution.

It's been a month. My bug report has been ignored. The problem remains. I will now abandon Opera after using it for over 20 years. I will not tolerate abide the dishonorable owners of this browser any longer.
To all who remain, g'luck. (You'll need it in spades.)

Last developer build didn't create a desktop shortcut here during the update.
I can confirm. The update to 64.0.3409.0 for Opera Developer didn't create a desktop icon on me where the previous build did. Might be fixed (at least in v64 builds) now.
