I've just started using Opera, but I can NOT find bookmarks anywhere (even to create a bookmark). It is not in the dropdown list at all. I get new tab / new window / new private window / recently closed / page / zoom etc etc ......... but NO BOOKMARKS. I keep seeing notes on the forum "how to add folder to bookmarks" - but where the heck is bookmarks ?????
Glad of any help. -

Once you have the bookmarks bar, you can add bookmarks a number of ways. You can drag the icon of the website from the left side of the address bar to the personal bookmarks bar, or drag a link from the speed dial to the bookmarks bar. Control D also works. And I like the extension from Opera store, Add Bookmark,
https://addons.opera.com/en/extensions/details/add-bookmark/?display=en
which gives you a star to click on, on the right side of the address bar. If you click on it, you not only can create the bookmark you want, but put it in the folder you want.
Remember you can also save places-links on your speed dial. With each link you save, you get a rectangulatpr thumbnail of the site. Drag one thumbnail over another to create a folder of two in one speed dial location. Keep dragging new thumbnails over that folder and you can have a folder of many links, thumbnails. And that's just for one speed dial position. You can do it for every position on the speed dial if you wish (and there's no limit to the number of positions you can have on the Speed dial). So the Speed Dial is also a huge resource for saving your favorites, and gives you a lot more to display (and have easy access to ) than your traditional speed dial. Still, I prefer the personal Bookmarks bar for the vast bulk of my Bookmarks, and use the Speed Dial to show off maybe 70 or 80 links. And you can wallpaper the speed dial, and make it look great.
And of course you can bookmark in Stash.
And if you want more resources, and easier handling over the personal bookmarks bar, add a bookmark manager extension, like "Neater Bookmarks" in the Chrome store or Chrookmarks or Tidy Bookmarks also in the Chrome store. Remember, all you need to add a chrome extension, is the Opera Extension, called "Download chrome Extension."

Thanks for that. I've got the bookmarks bar. I'll have to find out how to make folders now ..... and how to get all my bookmarks from Chrome. Does the bookmarks bar always have to be visible, or can you hide it ?

Also, even though I've now got the bookmarks bar, it still isn't in my menu. So when I've gone into help, and it says "Click on Menu>Bookmarks>Manage Bookmarks " I can't because its not in the dropdown menu.

What browser are you using. It thought you were using Opera 20 or 21.
In Opera 20 or 21, when you right click with the mouse at an empty place at the end of the bookmarks bar, you'll get an option to "Add Folder."
If your using Opera 12, none of the advice I've given is relevant. When you say you've gone into help, did you go into help in the browser menu, or did you find Opera help on the internet. That help you refer to, about "Click on Menu>Bookmarks>Manage Bookmarks " seems to relate to the Opera 12 browser.
Opera shifted from the Opera 12 Presto browser, to the Opera 15 (Blink browser) (at the time), now they are up to Opera 21. The new blink browser is the one Opera is currently working on developing. The old Opera 12 Presto browser is not being worked on.

I'm using Opera 21. I've got folders now. But I still don't have bookmarks listed in my dropdown menu. How do I import my bookmarks from Chrome ... without starting by "Click on Menu>Bookmarks>Manage Bookmarks"

One possibility is to copy the bookmarks file from the Chrome profile to the Opera 21 profile (replacing the bookmarks file that is there.
But take a look at the discussion in this thread about the xmarks extension (in the Chrome store) as it may be a way to approach this also.
Please be advised that to download a Chrome extesnion, you need the Opera extension, which you can get in the Opera add-on store called, "Download Chrome Extension.". You can go to the Opera add-on store via the menu item, "Get Extensions," in the Opera 21 menu of your browser (which you access by clicking the Opera logo in the far left, top of the browser).

Afaik thre is no bookmark menu on Opera 21. Also, you can't import bookmarks from other browsers yet.

"you can't import bookmarks from other browsers yet" is a misleading statement when it's actually possible.

When someone is asking for help, and if you just say, " Also, you can't import bookmarks from other browsers yet," without suggesting how it might be done, it might well make it sound like, in your opinion, they cannot get the bookmarks from another browser into Opera 21. Obviously, it wasn't intentional, and not a big deal. You're helping in such a wide range of posts, and are, in my opinion, invaluable. We're fortunate to have such knowledgeable moderators in Opera.
Now, there seem to be a few possibilities for moving the bookmarks from Chrome to Opera: (1) copying the Chrome bookmarks file (from its profile) into the Opera 21 profile, (2) using the Xmarks bookmarks add-on to synchronize bookmarks from Chrome to Firefox (which @groovemachine in a thread at the link below was quite enthusiastic about, particularly since he asserts that the folders in Chrome -- even folders within folders -- are carried over to Opera 21), (c) possibly using the free Linkman Lite (I'm not sure there as I've never used it, but it's mentioned in the thread on the issue of moving bookmarks from Chrome to Opera, https://forums.opera.com/topic/2956/how-to-add-the-chrome-bookmarks-functionality-to-the-latest-version-of-opera/1), and (d) one can alway trying importing the Chrome bookmarks into Opera 12.17 (which has an import feature in its menu)(File/Import and Export/Import as HTML (the Chrome bookmarks would need to first be saved as HTML), then after the bookmarks are in Opera 12.17, activating the bookmarks bar in Opera 21 (Control P, User Interface, and put check in Show Bookmarks Bar), and finally going to -- in Opera 21 -- the menu item, More Tools, and clicking on Bookmark Importer (specifically designed to import bookmarks from Opera 12 into Opera 21) (that Importer doesn't work to import bookmarks from other browsers at this point. (For this last approach, see leocg's comment in this thread on how to best make it work. http://forums.opera.com/topic/2839/new-install-but-no-bookmarks-import/17)
How nice it would be though if Opera did have a bona fide Importer in Opera 21 (the way it does in Opera 12), that could with a click import bookmarks from other browsers. Still notwithstanding that for the moment deficiency, it ought to be not that hard to get bookmarks from Chrome into Opera 21. There are a variety of approaches.

Ok, so how can someone do it using only Opera?
That's not the original question being asked.
