Opera is not starting

When I turned on my PC today, I was confused because my Opera browser wouldn’t start — or more accurately, it opened and then immediately closed. I tried many things, such as clearing the cache, reinstalling the browser, restarting the PC, etc., but nothing worked. Please help me!

@HannesKannEsTV The same happened to me! I have been trying everything too. At least I know it's not just my device.

Same here. One Windows 11 PC runs Opera fine. But on another Windows 11 PC Opera won't start. Logo appears, then nothing. The standard version of Opera, not GX or Air. Issue just appeared a few hours ago without anything that user did or noticed.
We installed portable Opera (USB) in affected PC. It didn't start either. But it did start up after Windows was booted to safe mode. Original, normally installed Opera would not run in safe mode.
While portable Opera was running, we opened settings and disabled hardware acceleration. Booted Windows normally, again portable Opera would not start.
Currently on the affected PC only Edge runs normally. Opera, Chrome, Brave and Firefox won't start.

I have been trying to fix the problem all day but mine is similar to a problem that was happening back in 2014, 2015 my entire tab itself stops responding and gets stuck on the "Loading..." screen. I love Opera GX but I'm honestly about to give up.

@Kiryu-3 I think Edge switched to Chromium too a few years ago. We have 2 PCs, Win 11 Pro 24H2. Only one is affected. Unfortunately quite many differences in games, apps and drivers installed in those PCs. Interesting issue to debug. There are many things to try from disabling Windows Defender to switching Nvidia GPU drivers. Or enabling Windows Sandbox (it comes with Pro version at least) and installing Opera inside it.
I ran out of time. I had to get some sleep and now it's morning here and I must go to work.
Edit: Reddit thread suggested this is caused by Microsoft Family Safety. Sure enough, when I check the affected Microsoft account under Family Safety in https:// account.microsoft. com, there is now an Edge -tab, and a setting for protecting web content. It mentions the setting blocks all browsers except Edge. My son is 17 years old and I had already disabled all tracking, reporting and blocks for his account. He runs Windows as Admin on the PC! This seems something Microsoft just implemented/enabled by default.

@HannesKannEsTV try temporary solution found on reddit,
renaming 'opera.exe'https://www.reddit.com/r/operabrowser/comments/1lkt3w9/temporary_fix_to_browser_not_starting/

Seems like Opera One and some other browsers are unable to launch for some users when Microsoft Family Safety is enabled;
If you're facing this issue but are unsure if you even have that stuff enabled, here are a couple things you can try:
Allow Opera One in MS Family Safety
-
Go to https://familysafety.microsoft.com/ or open the Family Safety mobile app
-
Select the user that's encountering this issue
-
To allow other browsers;
- Disable "Filter inappropriate websites" under the Edge tab OR;
- Go to Windows tab --> Apps & Games --> Unblock Opera One
Try logging out of your MS Account on Windows & log back in
- Open the Windows menu (Windows key)
- Click on your profile on bottom left
- Sign out
Rename the Opera.exe to something else
- Find Opera.exe by right-clicking the shortcut on your desktop --> Open file location
- Rename it to something else like Opera1.exe
- Launch it
You can then try renaming it back to opera.exe - we’ve seen one case of this process fixing the issue where renaming it back didn’t break it

@daria19 The renaming to Opera1.exe worked, thank you! I did try changing it back to opera.exe after but none of the tabs would open, thankfully I still had the other window open from where I'd previously renamed it so I've got it working!
