@LayLayL : I guess we will have to wait and see in the coming days and weeks when they have time to talk with the selected extension developers what level of Manifest V2 will be supported beyond the June 2025 cut off date in Opera based on your assessment. You are correct in clarifying that the only thing mentioned in the post specifically that will work beyond the June 2025 cutoff date is their own native ad blocking. It did also say in the post that Manifest v2 will continue to work until they decide the best path forward, so I have to assume that decision will need to be made well before the June 2025 cut off date.

This is not negate the fact that Opera is the only Chromium based browser besides Chrome with a add-on store which would make it possible to distribute add-ons that support some form of Manifest V2 beyond the June 2025 cut off date. If I am incorrect about this, please feel free to correct me.

At this point Firefox has only said they have "no plans to deprecate MV2 and will continue to support MV2 extensions for the foreseeable future", and that if down the road they change their mind they would give at least 12 months notice to developers. So it sounds like Firefox has a wait and see approach also, but it sounds like it will extend well past the June 2025 Chromium cut off date. Firefox does have its own add-on store so it does have the ability to continue to support Manifest V2 in the same way Opera could if they decide to do so. I don't think Firefox is the only real alternative when it comes to the Manifest deprecation until Opera makes themselves more clear as to what level of Manifest V2 they plan on supporting beyond June 2025 in their browser and add-on store.

With that said, I do think Firefox is a great alternative if you're looking for a browser engine other then Chromium, and you want something that is Open Source based. Firefox mobile is also nice if you require the same plug-ins that work on the desktop to run on the mobile version, but at the cost of performance. In many users experience (including my own) they choose a Chromium based browser because of better performance and security, and choose a Chrome based alternative like Opera due to the great included features.

It's great to see a browser that listens to user feedback and maintains features that others are phasing out. Having built-in ad blocking is especially helpful for a smooth browsing experience. Thanks, Opera, for sticking with what works for users!"

Thanks, Opera team, for addressing Manifest V3 concerns and prioritizing user experience! Supporting Manifest V2 extensions like uBlock Origin and maintaining the built-in ad blocker shows your commitment to privacy and performance. Opera’s dedication to flexibility and user choice is why it stands out. Keep up the great work! 🙌

@Opera-Comments-Bot Glad to hear this. I also won't have to learn Manifest V3 to make extensions (I was dreading that 🤓).

Actually, I'm glad to hear this, since it really sets Opera apart from other Chromium-based browsers. Even non-Chromium browsers like Firefox are going to follow in Google's steps (because surely Google knows what they're doing?). But not Opera!

            Keep up the good work.

@pilis00 Assuming that's what's really happening. As was pointed out earlier, there is some wiggle-room in what they said.

Since there aren't many "coming days and weeks" left, they should have done all the needed reaching out by now and therefore know what will be happening, which they can in turn communicate to us,

I don't think Opera won't keep the promise, to be honest. They even have low market share, and switching to MV3 might cause them more market share lose.

@pilis00 It may all depends on Chromium. If maintaining the support for Manifest V2 becomes too costly, Opera will not be able to keep using it.

@leocg I'll honestly trust what Opera said.

Also, Brave will continue keeping some MV2 extensions, including uBO.

I guess this should be another confirmation that uBO remains in Opera.

@leocg I would reply, that they made this announcement fully knowing that Chromium may shift from MV2. Otherwise they were not any reason to say it. If they don't uphold it, I'd say they were misleading. Anyway, I myself don't rely on extensions anyway.

@pilis00 I guess that they did this, because they are the only browser vendor that has its own extension store.

Brave to my knowledge won't support uBO or MV2 extensions but they maintain their own adblocker within the browser. That's what also Vivaldi promised that they would intensify working on their own built-in ad block.

Brave will keep 4 MV2 extensions in which uBO is included.

But Brave isn't an option for me as I don't like the way you sync your browser data and their frequent crypto ads.

@pilis00 I don't think, they will really. They've got their own "Shields" - maintaining support for uBO MV2 wouldn't be necessary as they have their own solution which is a USP in a way and bringing them even more costs.
AdGuard on the other hand has already a MV3-ready solution to my knowledge.

But that's of course guessing. And my sentiments about Brave are similar to your's. All in all there's nothing except for decent adblocking that lets Brave stand out. It's only Chrome without the Google specific stuff featurewise. Nonetheless a capable browser but not for me, I think.

@DerSchlingel For me the post shows that although they want to keep supporting Manifest V2, it may not be possible forever.

When Chromium finally removes the MV2 API code, if Opera wants to keep supporting MV2, Opera will have to patch it back in with each new build of Opera. This might not be maintainable as Chromium code continues to change. So, I wouldn't be surprised if MV2 support disappears eventually.

@burnout426 @leocg I get it. But developers are not less smart than we are, are they? Why do they promise to uphold MV2 if that's simply too much to do? That's what a plain reading of the text suggests.
I guess, everybody reading their press release is therefore expecting them to do these patches.
So, it's only some marketing in the end, then?

@burnout426 if that's really true, if they wanna keep MV2 in Opera the updates will likely be a lot more rare.

That post they made on X should be enough in my opinion to confirm that Opera will keep their "promise".
