@sporty78 My Opera checks automaticslly, so I never see that. However, there are others things updated when Opera checks. Opera has a list of workarounds for sites that behave poorly, aa an example. So even if your browser version is up to date doesn't mean there were no updates that occured.

Opera updates automatically as well but, that stated, each morning I still click 'Help->About Opera' in order to check for updates manually.

@sporty78 As a tester I generally run the latest Developer (aka alpha) build, though I have all current versions installed.

Some "internet security software" (firewalls) seem to block the auto-check feature. Other than that the only way to block the update checker is to prevent it from being run automatically - it is normally set by the installer to run automatically but can of course be removed from the autorun list.

@sporty78 Actually, I just looked back at your first post wnd noticed it says you're on version 95. As someone who is nor running at least Windows 10, you can't install any current version of Ooera - current being 117 for the main version (currently called Opera One after some UI updates in version 100).

Sorry to xay no one can really help. 😞

I should have been clear that I am running Win 7.

However, I am still able to 'manually' check (and install) updates though.

What is being 'updated' then? Firefox has an 'Extended Service Release'-Does Opera have an equivalent for Win 7 users?

Q: Since the browser has the capacity to 'check for updates,' why is there an option to download the software again?

For the situations where the auto update is not working, is blocked or no longer supports the version, what seems to be your case.

Q: When cookies are cleared and the browser is closed and reopened, one, the Browser Menu Button is no longer Red and, two, the 'Get The Latest Security Update' Message is not longer listed. Why is that?

Probably because the information was erased when you cleaned the cookies.

Q: Are software updates enabled automatically by default?

Yes, automatic updates are enabled by default in Opera

Q: Is there a way to disable the software from automatically checking for updates?

Yes, as said you can rename the auto updater executable.

@sporty78 Last update for version 95 and, therefore, for Windows 7 was released in October 2023.

@sporty78 They had one for a while, but as far as I know stopped updating it spme time ago. When I'm on my home system I'll see when it was last updated.

@sporty78 Probably nothing is being updated, Opera just checks and find nothing. Or, maybe, can't even check because the version is no longer supported.

@sporty78 I guess it's clear enough that Opera no longer supports Windows 7.

                                        @leocg

As mentioned, as recent as a week ago, after clicking 'Menu->About Opera,' an install occurred, and, consequently, I was instructed to restart Opera.

'Again,' I ask: Since Firefox uses an 'ESR,' does Opera have one as well (or an equivalent?).

If someone' can find out and update this post, all of us would appreciate it.
