Good alternatives to Opera 12.16?

Can anyone recommend anything? The new Opera is awful, obviously, and development of it is progressing so slow that there's no point waiting any longer for new features to be added, so I'm looking around for something to replace it permanently. I've tried Firefox with some extensions which is OK, but I'm wondering if there's other options out there that have the features/customisability of 12.16 but are still actively being developed.

The New Opera 20 is quite impressive and promising, not at all awful as funksoulbro would suggest. Opera 20 has a range a very fine (unique) features -- a speed dial with folders, so that you can have a speed dial within each of the speed dial links (I'd say it is "fabulous"), as well as great speed, a rich assortment of extensions that are available in the Opera and Chrome stores, Discover Mode (for exploring current events on a range of subject, for a range of countries, and for language lovers (in different languages), Stash, and Off Road mode for browsing when the computer speed is not great (maybe small laptops) or when depending on a wi-fi signal that is not great. Opera, thus, continues its rich tradition of being quite innovative. To that, I'd say bravo..
Now funksoulbro, you know why all of the features are not there with Opera 20, as were in Opera 12.16 -- because Opera switched browser engines from Presto to Blink, and it will take some time to deveop the new Blink Opera. (and one should underscore that far more extension possibilties are available with Opera now than with Opera 12.14). Still, you're clearly not a happy camper ;)))) But really, I find rather shabby of you to seek to hijack the forum to what other browsers Opera users should change to. I mean, this is an Opera Forum. In a sense, we're guests of Opera, which puts the forum out. Your thread damages the availability of a forum like this for everyone.
I personally think this thread question is not proper, and the forum moderators ought to close the thread. I mean, you do have NERVE, funksoulbro.

Sorry, I forgot to add a "no fanboys please" disclaimer on my first post. I'm perfectly aware of the features (or lack of!) of Chropera, so there's no need to act like some unpaid salesman for a browser that is nowhere near ready for prime time.
From your own review of Opera on Cnet: -

Wow indeed. Shame all the stuff you loved is gone, leaving a bare shell of a browser, but much like the other handful of annoying fanboy fools on here, you're another hypocrite. Every one of those people said that they loved Opera because of it's features and customisability - some of them even talked about how Presto was so much better than Chrome's engine - yet as soon as Opera switched from Presto to the same engine as Chrome and removed all those features they loved, they did a complete u-turn. Laughable.
Anyone non-fanboys care to comment?

All I asked is for another browser that has the same functions as Opera 12.16. If that gets you riled up to the point where you immediately turned into an unpaid Opera cheerleader, claiming I'm "despicable" and "sordid" and trying to "poison" people, then I suggest you seek some professional counselling or perhaps see a psychologist.

Thanks!I dont really want to poison the room by posting other browsers, but since I havent given up on Opera and still have it installed as one of my many secondary browsers (just waiting for the improvements that would qualify it as my main default browser) I'll post these links as for what works for me FunkSoulBro, every bit as good as 12.16 as far as I'm concerned, everyone has a right to use another browser till the improvements get made on this one

Thanks!With most of the browsers out there being nothing more than a chrome clone, our options are slim. I have tried many and my search has landed me with Firefox too. With quite a few extensions and some scripts I've gotten to near (Presto)Opera usability.
The extensions I use are:

Context Search
Download Manager Tweak
Grease Monkey
New Tab Homepage
Personal Menu
Stylish
Tile Tabs
Undo Closed Tabs Buttona few others and some scripts. There is a session manager that works just as Opera's did that has an undo button that can be placed on the address bar as well. Also, SimpleMail gives a built in mail client that can be a pinned tab (which is how I used it in Opera) but I found it a little too buggy for my liking.

Thanks!Actually, if it were as simple as just switching to another flavor of browser to recapture the functionality of Presto Opera, most complaint posts in the Opera forums wouldn't have ever appeared - users would simply have switched and would be gone. But obviously, Presto Opera was unique in many, many ways. One can recreate some of its functionality using other browsers, but nothing exists (yet) that can match it. I've been able to get the most critical Old Opera functionality and GUI layout that I need via Firefox and ~9 extensions... but, of course, what I deem "critical" won't match many other users' demands.
The fact remains that Presto Opera is increasingly "history", as its age is showing more and more. Users who need its features must now either seek other browsers (and accessories) that best match their needs or patiently wait to see what might be forthcoming with New Opera or the various other new-ish browsers being developed (like Otter, etc). There certainly are no reasons most users can't install several browsers and try them out, especially as time goes by and the designs evolve.

I recommend Chrome. Or...FirefoxNightly. Not plain Firefox, but the Nightly or Aurora versions.

It's worth mentioning that the nightly build has their more chrome like, streamlined interface, Australis. They also have silent updates just like Vanilla Firfox unless you are using a portable version and there isn't one(that I know of) for the suggested builds.

Funksoulbro knows very well that other browsers do not have the feature set of Opera Presto. He's simply being very disingenuous with this rather useless thread. I completely agree with lem... moderators, consider locking this useless thread. It has no merit and will only serve as flame bait. What does he really expect? Come on... there are only so many browsers out there and is he telling us that he's incapable of choosing one but instead needs our help? This is little more than a poorly disguised set-up. LOL

There is no full-fledged replacement for the "classic" Opera 12! Today, Mozilla Firefox with big extensions pack(few dozens) is the closest alternative to Opera/Presto but FF not even not comes close in terms of interface/controllability/productivity. Some of Opera's unique feature can't be restored with extensions.
Mozilla's UI is awful when it's compared with Opera. That last link is helpful but everyone is different and there are other options. For me, I haven't found anything to replicate the email side of 12.15, but for browsing I second the nomination for the latest version of Maxthon Coud which out of the box has an Opera Link equivalent, RSS reader, bookmarks manager, notes, sidebar for quick access to these, option to use 2 different engines, separate search box and customizable search options (yay!), mouse gestures, download manager, reader mode and an excellent source sniffer for downloading videos etc. The sidebar looks a bit clunky, but it can even be detached and pinned to your desktop which is a nice trick although I don't use it. They also maintain several older versions! The main negative so far is that the Mac version doesn't seem to have these features, it seems the development path has been different.
Of the other Chrome clones, I like Comodo Dragon for speed, appearance and security. It can be set up to use Comodo's DNS servers.
Having said all that, when Opera 15 came out I despaired, but I find Opera 20 is usable, fast and stable. I don't love it, but it's getting better.

I posted this thread because there are lots of browsers out there outside the main handful that everyone knows, and maybe there is an option I've not considered that's great. It would save me a lot of time compared to trying every browser in existence in turn, trying out various extensions/add-ons etc.

It would save me a lot of time compared to trying every browser in existence in turn, trying out various extensions/add-ons etc.I took the Firefox Nightly for a test drive and it is horrid. With the new layout you are unable to move certain buttons around on the address bar. The menu(as you can see in the link I provided earlier) is clearly designed for finger painting.
Palemoon doesn't have silent updates and is against the new UI so it is based off of v24-ESR branch. I guess I'll be moving over to that if the one I'm using(v28) starts to perform poorly
