Oh how wonderful Presto was but sadly... such poor marketing. What utter nonsense. Man do you need to get over yourself and wake up to reality. Thankfully Opera has done just that and it will be much better off for it in the long run ... yes, minus a few thousand whining geeks but with tens of thousands of new "average" users who couldn't care less about all the ultra configurable nature of Presto.

Of course it's not just my opinion seeing as Opera themselves complained to the EU about the very thing I mentioned which led to Microsoft being sued for antitrust and the inclusion of the browser ballot box for EU Windows installs.

Opera's desktop numbers have been on a steady decline as well so it would appear that your mastering of tripe is on full display. The future might hold different results but until then your opinion is just that.

I'm not going to tell someone that their experience is wrong but I will add to the conversation something that seems to be rather obvious yet overlooked.

IE has been the king of web browsers and it never had extensions. The key to it's success was that it was already bundled with Windows, that it just worked and was simple to use. Chrome's success imo is a mirror of just that. Open source, extensions, anti-Microsoft, etc.. appeals to a very small demographic. The thing that all the top browsers have in common is not the ability to add 3rd party functionality but that they are American and thus are marketed with gusto and shadiness. Google, like Micorsoft, bundles Chrome with a plethora of things, essentially hijacking people's systems. Got an iPhone? then you NEED to install iTunes. Have and Android phone? then you need to get a gmail account which you might as well connect to circles and + and all that crap. So you'll excuse me if I don't think fast speeds and extension are what rule the day.

From my experience, extensions can add some much needed functionality but they do so in a way that rarely feels native to the browser. Presto had things that people didn't use and the beauty was that they didn't have to. The new thinking seems to be that a dumbed down GUI with finger painting capabilities is what people want, and I for one am glad because I think this will give birth to some new mavericks who will buck the monoculture trend and the current overall lack of creativity.(Adding a web portal and turning text items into pictures isn't what I would consider ground breaking)

System Restore is good but there are only certain dates to choose from to roll back to. Partitioned drives will not be affected though

If they're not being monitored that is which I don't think they are, usually it's just the C drive.

You could also Remove Opera and then clean out the registry with something like CCleaner. You might have to restart your computer after you've removed Opera if it doesn't go completely away when uninstalled, then clean the registry. Some files might be orphaned at this point and will require you opening up the programs you use and setting them as default

You keep repeating this but the fact is, Opera DOES receive monetary compensation from the companies who's searches are included. The file that l33t4opera suggests altering is called "default_partner_content.json", emphasis on partner. Other search providers do not have a monetary partnership with Opera so read into that what you like.

The lack of choice is becoming common place as free software(note. nothing is free) is becoming more of an ad delivery platform, just like Android os, etc.. Opera was once a browser but it, like soon to be Mozilla who will have ads in their speed dails, are more focused on generating profit than creating user friendly software. Paid software will become a rare thing I'm afraid because a price tag is not as tempting as a never ending supply of ad revenue.

Nothing about Opera's history, or its most recent financial report suggests a company that doesn't know what it's doing. In fiscal year 2014, they had a revenue growth of forty percent. They are involved in a wide range of activities suggestive of an innovative and vital company. Much of the criticism of Opera's competence come from users with a self-interest in the other direction.

Huh? There is no possible way to have calculated a fiscal year that is only 5 months old. They have released only first quarter numbers for 2014(Apr. 30) which are down from Q4 2013. The rise that they had enjoyed was in part due to the Skyfire deal in June and selling 8 million shares. Their stock has been falling shortly after the start of the year though. None of which has anything to do with the current success or failure of the desktop variation of the browser. The opinions expressed however are in direct relation to the choices the company has made regarding the browser and not any other business venture.

Meaning no disrespect, but your, mine, Jon's, nor any number of other users' opinions simply don't matter regarding whether Opera is right or wrong in what they're going about doing. What matters is the opinion of that portion of the stockholders who vote to determine the composition of Opera ASA's board of directors, and the opinions of that board as interpreted by company management and its development staff. The stockholders are the ones with skin in the game, and they determine the course of the company via which directorate and management teams are put in place based on their votes... whether those stockholders correctly grasp the nuances of the "business" or not when voting. The rest of us are simply bystanders whose opinions are worth exactly the value of those electrons inconvenienced by posting them, whether those opinions turn out to be right or wrong.
The sad reality is that there are not a lot of determinative privileges and perks that come with using a free web browser, no matter who creates it or in what direction they carry the design.
