@smokofenek The devices have software in common, mainly anti-virus, firewall and secure related software?
Did you try with different ISPs and in different networks? -

@leocg An older, similar thread where lots of things were tried.

What processor (and model number) do you have on each of your 3 systems? Sounds weird to ask, but maybe it has to do what extensions are supported by your processors (if they're older). Maybe Opera introduced something a while ago that broke things on your processors. I'm doubting this is the case since you said Windows 10 (unless you're running it on older hardware), but figured I'd ask.

In the thread here, some of the errors were caused by using a different language in Windows. You just using English US locale or something different?

Also yeah. If You mean just installing the Opera on USB stick, then I did that, opened it and immediately went to update page, to check if it works. Without setting anything.
And, just to double-check, it didn't help?

@leocg Stupid question. But how do I create a new account on Windows 10? All I can do is change my current account. I never really had to do this before, so I completely doesn't know how to do it.
About different ISP, You are actually lucky I have internet connection on my smartphone, otherwise I couldn't check this.
But nope. I disabled ethernet connection I use all the time and made wifi router via bluetooth on my smartphone and connected my PC to it. But it works the same. Still greyed out etc.I also asked my sister earlier, she lives in different place, but has the same ISP, if she uses Opera. She does and I asked her if she can update the browser. She could have and it worked as desired.
@burnout426 My old notebook had... I think AMD? I'm not sure. My old desktop PC had Intel, but don't remember which exactly. Wait, I may have saved it on my documents. Yes! I had i5-4590 on previous PC. And currently I have i7-10700K.
I use english Windows in Poland region. But I kept dates, clocks and keyboard polish. So generally everything I see is written in english, but Windows know I am from Poland and dates/hours are all in polish. Also I think some other things are written in polish. For example my local group is not called Administrators but Administratorzy (which is the same word in polish).
And no, USB Opera didn't work. I will try installing Opera in regular path, without changing anything on new user, when I figure out how to make a new account in Windows 10, as I never did that before, because I never needed to do so. The last time I needed multiple users were in XP, however I did this in Vista or Seven too. Maybe 8. Not sure. But since I didn't really need it, I haven't used multiple accounts for very long time. I will try to search for it in Google. Then will try installing Opera as mentioned above.

Now something odd happened. Not sure what caused it, but I opened Opera Beta to try to install new update, but it was still like in other cases. Greyed out "checking" for ever. But now i see the Opera logo with red background and dot. Just above "Settings" it says to get the latest security update, but in Update & Recovery page it still doesn't update anything. The "Get the latest security update" links to https://www.opera.com/computer/beta.
To be clear, I Opened Beta Opera when in connection with my wifi router in smartphone, but it didn't work. I swapped connection back to ethernet and was writing the reply above, and when I send it I just looked around and seen this. Not sure what's going on, but checking for updates is still not working, though it somehow tells me to get the latest security updates with the aforementioned dot, that I haven't seen for so long.
I also opened Opera Dev too and will see if it will get the same dot after a while.
My current version of Beta/Dev are: 69.0.3686.30 and 70.0.3728.0. I didn't upgrade it to the latest, because I use them as a "maybe it will work, so I will see it's going to update". Because if something will fix the issue, I could just use Dev/Beta to check for updates and if it will work, I will se it immediatelly.

Start button -> Settings -> Accounts -> Family & other users -> Add someone else to this PC -> I don't have this person's sign-in information -> add a user without a Microsoft account -> type
operatest
in the "Who's going to use this PC?" field, click Next. Then, close down your programs, click the start button, click your username, click "sign out", then, sign into the new account.

Family & other users
After the account is created, in "Family & other users", you can click the new username and click "change account type" if you want to change it an administrator account. First though, try the account as is. You can download the Opera installer, launch it, click "options", set "install for" to "current user", where "install path" defaults to "C:\Users\operatest\AppData\Local\Programs\Opera". uncheck "make Opera the default browser and uncheck import.
Then, you can just test Opera that way. And/or, you can launch the installer, click "options", set "install path" to a folder on your desktop, set "install for" to "standalone installation" and install. Then, you can test that way too if you want.
Neither of those ways will interfere with your normal account.

Okay. You're good there for sure.

@smokofenek I guess that access to the auto update server being blocked can be discarded.

@smokofenek I would download and install the latest version and check how it behaves in the next updates.

@burnout426 Okay, I just did that and... it worked on new user. I tried (earlier and now) to change Opera language to polish, but didn't work. I don't really want to change Windows language, as because I google things up (about Windows), I can find what they are about. Because if they tell me to type english name of the service and I use polish... then it can be called compeltely different. But, yeah... new installation on new user make Opera works just fine.
I used local non-admin account to do that. And that way Opera update worked as intended. it checked and said there is no updates.
I didn't change any setting in the instaler. It installed Opera in AppData or something, whithout me changing anything.
@leocg Well, I am using the newest Opera since 75 came out. 75.0.3969.93. Downloaded it few days ago, then made this forum thread.
So what could it possibly mean if standalone Opera in standard path make it work? And Windows was in polish I think, by default. Does it mean that it's path error? it's really a shame if it is, because I wanted to have standalone path for browsers. However most of them doesn't allow to change path anyway... From my 19 browsers, only Opera and Vivaldi allowed me to chose a path. All Chromes, Braves, Firefox, IE and Edge didn't.

@smokofenek If only the standalone installation works, then there should be something wrong with the current installation.
It could be a broken profile, for example. However, since you have multiple installations and all have problems, I guess it may not be the problem. It can also be an issue with Opera not being able to write in the current installation and profile directories.
It may be other things too.

I created an "operatest" (administrator) user account on Windows 10 and logged into it. I downloaded the Opera Stable installer, launched it, clicked "options", set "install path" to "D:\Browsers\Opera Test", set "install for" to "current user" (the default), unchecked "make Opera default browser", and installed.
No problems with updating there.
I then changed the location of the desktop for the user to "D:\Desktop" and started Opera.
No problems with checking for updates there.
I then changed the location of the downloads folder for the user to "D:\Downloads" (just to see), started Opera and checked that it was using that path as the downloads folder.
No problems with checking for updates there.
So, at least in my case with a fresh Windows user account (local), and fresh Opera installation (current version) with fresh Opera profile, Opera and the desktop on D:\ instead of the default locations on C: works fine.

@leocg @burnout426
So if everything works fine in the same conditions, what else can it be? This is all ridiculous. It's against any kind of logic I feel like it will never change to normal. -
burnout426 Volunteer last edited by
@smokofenek I'm going to try an operatest account with the same conditions but signed into a Microsoft account instead of just being local to see if it makes a difference. Will let you know.

@burnout426 Okay. No problem when using a Microsoft account either (whether the desktop was at C:\Desktop or D:\Desktop).

Can you goto "Start button -> Settings -> Accounts -> Family & other users" and make sure your main account is not part of a family. Your user should just be listed under "other users" and not at the top as part of a family.

Have you reported this as bug to Opera? They may actually know, what kind of COM init does fail or something.
I would think that this is permissions or other configuration issue (because your test user account did work), but reading all the tread I have got almost no ideas - everything is already attempted.
I would try to set your Opera program folders security to Full Access for Everyone (of course not permanently) - this should remove all access blocking; I have solved some strange problems this way (I mean I have narrowed search field, not kept folders fully open).Have you looked at windows event log? This sometimes (not often, but happens) contains clues about what may have gone wrong, esp with COM components.
