How many tabs are opened? How many extensions are being used?
You can open Opera's task manager to check all opened processes.
I had done that, but not completely. After I did all cookies and cache to the beginning of time, Google authentication is back to normal.

I upgraded today v40 (Mac) and seems I cannot signin for sync. When I signin, the icon appears for 5 seconds in the menu then disappears, but preferences for sync shos that I am still not logged in .. still shows the "Sign in" button.

Yep. That was it. Disabled it and everything seems to be working, however I'm still pondering over how it got enabled in the first place.

How do I see the opera's cache?
Menu > About Opera. Take note of the path to cache folder.
Open the cache folder in a file manager.
There is also opera://view-http-cache/
