  Note that on Linux Opera does not usually support H.264 video, so it is possible for a particular video to work in Firefox or even Chrome but fail in Opera. If that is the nature of your problem, then it is no surprise.

  Hi shaffe, I hear you! If I had my druthers I'd change few things with Opera.

  I'd have:

  A secure and encrypted download page.

  Advanced settings that are easy to access.

  A Chrome-like search engines page --which allows users to add search engines and then make them default.

  A forum where a user is free to edit his posts without any time restrictions.

  That said, that would only be if I had my druthers --which I don't!

  shaffe, DuckDuckGo is a terrific search engine which can easily be made default in Opera. StartPage by Ixquick, is another excellent search engine. It has Google search results, but without Google's privacy concerns. Qwant is interesting. That's for sure.

  All this said, Opera is still my favorite browser by far.

  I found the issue: it's related to nvidia proprietary drivers! (I suspected)
  Solved by using nouveau drivers, but it is just a workaround.
  I'm a web developer! I use Opera to develop all of my sites and applications.
  I think this issue affects many people: all of nvidia drivers I try give the same result: weird rendering.
  I wonder if there's a way to better inspect this problem.
  Finally, I'm in love with Opera since 2006 🙂 so I'd like to help solve this. It's a pity that many people could just switch to Chrome to solve this issue..

  I'm glad you figured out what the problem what the problem was. And I suspect you're a gamer too --using nvidia drivers is a clue!

  Yes, Opera is great, and I've been using it for years too. I wish Opera would have a secure download site such as Firefox and Google Chrome do. People look for that little green lock now when they download something. I suspect Opera would have more users if it just made that one simple change. And it is because of this, I install Opera by the command line, but I don't think many people want to bother with that! But, yeah, Opera rocks. It is my favorite browser.

  Also, in regards to rendering, I still have a problem seeing the cursor in the Omnibox with many themes. That problem has not gone away for me. I once considered the problem solved because all I did was change themes in LXDE; but with Xfce, I'm noticing that I can't see the cursor with a lot of themes. I only discovered recently that this problem isn't limited to one theme at all. So I'd guess you'd say, I'm using a workaround too!

  Are you using Unity? I know I have not experienced this problem when running Opera-stable and Xubuntu 16.04. Maybe there's a bug in the GNOME shell, or within the Unity interface, that still needs to be worked out. I know sometimes these bugs can take months to get ironed out.

  Although there's more initial customization that is needed when you first install Xubuntu, most people who begin using Xfce find that they enjoy the experience a lot. Ubuntu MATE is another very popular option. YouTube Xubuntu 16.04 and MATE 16.04 and take a peek at these two desktop environments. Install one, and then install Opera. I wouldn't be surprised if you find the flashing screens stops with Opera when running either Xubuntu or MATE.

  I know, personally, that 64-bit Xubuntu and Opera-stable get along just fine on my Toshiba Satellite laptop.

  UPDATE:

  As of Opera 30, the commands in my first post work for both 32-bit and 64-bit computers. That said, on a 32-bit computer, these forum pages do not always render themselves correctly. If given a choice between 32-bit and 64-bit, I recommend going for 64-bit. Things work better if you do.

  Not much instruction needed ... go to ftp://ftp.opera.com/pub/opera/linux/ and download the version you want in one of the "tarball" formats - tar.gz, tar.bz2 or tar.xz. Use whatever archiver you have to extract the file to your home directory. Inside the folder you'll find a shell script that can run Opera without ever installing the file, and also a script that can install the program. If you just run the "opera" script it'll create a "profile" folder within the same folder and run Opera using that profile - which obviously won't overwrite any of Opera 37's files or settings. If you run the install script you can tell the installer where to move the program files (say, to /opt/opera instead of to /usr/lib/opera) - compare that to where Opera 37 is installed and you can again avoid any overwriting.

  A few versions of Linux don't use either rpm or dpkg, so they had to have a basic archive with an install script for those versions. The "opera" script was added later so that you could run Opera from the home folder without ever installing it either because you were a user who couldn't get root access to install it properly or because the system had a different version which you ddidn't want to overwrite.

  Opera Mail is just Opera 12 with some tweaks to hide the browser stuff (which also introduced some bugs etc.). It was never finished and is no longer being worked on (besides the recent security update, which only applies to win and mac as there's no official *nix build). The version that's in Opera 12 works better.

  You can still use Opera 12 for mail. In the advanced preferences under "programs and features", just add/set the http and https protocols to open in the Opera browser so links in emails open in the browser.

  You can start Opera 12 with the -pd "path to directory" to make it use a specific profile folder if you want. You can put your old mail folder, contacts.adr, operaprefs.ini, wand.dat and opcert6.dat there. Or, just let it use the default .opera profile folder if the upgrade to the new Opera didn't take it over.

  Disable updates to Opera 12 if it tries to force you to upgrade to the new Opera.
