Java is not supported on either Google Chrome, Chromium or Opera on Linux, and none of them will get support as Java in the browser is dying.

What pages do you use which need Java?

If you really must have it, you have to use Firefox.

I forgot few troubleshooting questions:

opera version [36.0.2120.0 dev] does it crash without extensions (= private mode) [n/a] does it crash without active plugins (set plugins to activate with click) [no] does it crash while plugins are active (videos in background etc) [n/a] does it crash with html5 videos [n/a]

Is your network connected directly to your machine? There is some delay to establish the (wi-fi) connection on my machines - but only a few seconds. After that, if Sync is enabled Opera will be doing that - again usually just a few seconds. Extensions? Some of those do their own update checks or synchronization. Try disabling sync or a few extensions and see if it makes much difference.

Oh and also with Flash now you have to hit the PLAY button every time you hit a flash element. Why?

In Settings, Websites, Plug-Ins tick first option (Run all plug-in content) - no more unnecessary clicks.
