The Opera 28 has been promoted to the beta channel: 28.0.1750.15, the change log, and the official announcement.
Bookmarks, syncing and other improvements
You can share your bookmarks between multiple devices: any computer running Opera beta 28 or phones with Opera for Android beta 28. We have been working on this feature for some time in our developer channel. Today, the quality has earned the feature a “beta” label.
If you want to try syncing, click on the Opera account button (to the right of the address field) and sign into your Opera account. Do this on all your devices and you’ll see your bookmarks everywhere!
Sync bookmarks between Opera for computers and Opera mobile for Android
We also made some small improvements to the bookmark manager. One frequent request was to incorporate bookmarks into the search suggestions in the combined search and address bar. We are glad to announce that this has now been implemented. Look for the heart icon next to suggested pages.
Mac improvements
Our Mac team has been hard at work to better integrate Opera with the latest Mac OS release. In beta 28, they made significant strides towards saving you bandwidth during installation and update, as well as other Mac-y fixes:
-
Added “vibrancy” to the address field (see the screen shot above)
-
Improved Mac full-screen mode, making all toolbars and the menu bar visible at the same time
-
Compressed the heck out of installation and update packages (the file size for autoupdates and network installations is down by a quarter!)
New bundled themes
Opera beta 28 includes an update to the bundled themes, so you can have a fresh, new look for your start page. Check out the new themes and see if you can’t find one you like.
\m/

....and we have the choice of Bing as a default search again. What an extraordinary lack of choice that was.

WHAT HAPPENED TO THE BETA SPEED DIAL?
AND THE TAB TITLES LOOK PIXELATED
WORST UPDATE EVER -

Nice. I switched to opera beta a short while back and I'm really liking it. Looks lovely and mostly a pleasure to use.
A few minor suggestions:
When opening the bookmarks view it'd be great if the focus went to the bookmark search box.
I know some others aren't keen on the new style of bookmarks, but I actually really like it. The live search feature with big boxes is great.. so it's a shame i have to click on the search box each time. When selecting a text URL and right clicking and choosing "Go to Web Address" it'd be great if it opened in a new tab. Most other things like that seem to open in a new tab (and i think chrome and firefox do to), but opera overwrites my existing tab.
When entering text in the location bar, is there a way to cycle through the different search engines using the keyboard?
Is there any way to reorder the extensions/icons to the right of the location bar?
Not sure I like having the synchronize icon there on the right of the location bar, I already have too many icons there.
For those of us using the bookmarks bar, it'd be nice to have a "all bookmarks" button that goes to the bookmarks page.
For bookmark management, things like "select all" and copy/paste aren't really obvious. The usual keyboard shortcuts work, but maybe there should be some buttons.
The Recent Tabs menu item seems to only show tabs from this session, is that right? Chrome shows ones from previous sessions too.
I'm off to test the sync.

Why is Opera going back and forth with the Speed Dial design!?
I don't really care if the bar is on the bottom or on the left, but I liked it when the page dials where square - now the're back to the old design, but worse (they're either matte/bleak or low quality). -

Why is Opera going back and forth with the Speed Dial design!?
Because they were/are doing an experiment regarding a new speed dial. And as the new start page was having some issues, they decided to disable it while they are redesigning the speed dial.
You can (re)enable it at opera://flags/#experimental-start-page

I prefer the original speed dial.
I tried the new version and wasn't so keen, so I went back to the original. There isn't really a big difference, so I'm not clear what benefits the new (disabled) version was supposed to have.

The experimental start page doesn't look like the new speed dial though
it's still shitty af -

I did re-enable the experimental Speed Dial - but it's not at all what it was with the minimalistic design. What it did to Speed Dial was just add a useless label below each page icon, which makes it even worse than the original one. The icons now take up even more space.

I really liked that old (disabled) minimalistic speed dial. Not this opera://flags/#experimental-start-page
The point is that it looks much more beautiful on non-big screens (laptops, for example).
If you have many bookmarks on speed dial, it is much more convenient.
And personally I prefer sitename over preview&title. It would be great, if we could at least choose. -

IMO the best implementation would just be to have an option for both dial types (old style thumbnail, and new coast style text tiles). There could just be a toggle button right on the speed dial page to switch between them, similar to the button on the top right of firefox's new tab page.

Yes, the new design was indeed an advantage. For preview purposes it was more clearly arranged getting an excellent overview of the websites. Please may we get back the possibility to choose between old and new start page layout?

I think I have a hunch on where they might be going with the new speed dial. My guess is that eventually they will more tightly integrate the speed dial with the new bookmarks manager/add bookmark button, so that you would be able to choose the thumbnail style for each dial based on the thumbnail that you choose in the add bookmark/heart menu button. This would allow for one speed dial that could make anyone happy. You can already choose the coast like text based thumbnail from the heart menu when bookmarking a page.
Considering that they are already working on merging the backend for bookmarks and speeddial this would make a lot of sense.

Hi @fadeddream,
When opening the bookmarks view it'd be great if the focus went to the bookmark search box.
I know, that this is not exactly what you want, but you can press the Tab key, or Ctrl+F, to focus on the box.
When selecting a text URL and right clicking and choosing "Go to Web Address" it'd be great if it opened in a new tab.
For that purpose you can try the "Open in (background) tab" extension - after you install it, go to the Options page, and untick the checkbox on the left of "Open [in current tab]", and tick the checkbox on the left of "Open in new tab", and then click on the "Save" button.
When entering text in the location bar, is there a way to cycle through the different search engines using the keyboard?
click down-arrow key, and press alt+right-arrow, or alt+left-arrow.
Is there any way to reorder the extensions/icons to the right of the location bar?
Please have a look here.
For those of us using the bookmarks bar, it'd be nice to have a "all bookmarks" button that goes to the bookmarks page.
Press Ctrl+Shift+B, and drag the "Opera" icon on the left of the address bar, and drop it onto the Bookmarks Bar

Opera Beta's updater has a bug. It daily creates a subfolder Opera Autoupdate in my accounts Download folder. That is wrong, the folder should reside in %TEMP%!
Never happened before.I installed Opera Beta as install for single user.

@l33t4opera
Thanks. Many useful tips. Though I'd still recommed a few of them to be baked in rather than needing extensions/tweaking."Press Ctrl+Shift+B, and drag the "Opera" icon on the left of the address bar, and drop it onto the Bookmarks Bar ;-)"
Interesting. This also allows you to add the bookmarks to your speed dial - opera mini style. My "Recent tabs" menu doesn't show anything from before the browser was closed. Is that how it's supposed to work? In chrome it shows your previous set of tabs so you can restore them all after restarting the browser.
I prefer the older speed dial with the bigger more illustrative icons (the current default). But is there a way to remove the redundant google box? Because with 3 rows of speed dial buttons on a 1440 x 900 display the bottom ones are a bit off the bottom of the screen.
Re:sync. Good to see current tabs will be arriving soon. It'd be nice to have a way to exclude some folders from sync. For folders with private info such as banking. It'd also be nice to have a way of deleting your synced bookmarks without having to delete your whole opera account.

You mean the search field? You can disable it in settings after have enabled the power usermode by entering the konami code on settings page.
