is there a way i can force opera to identify as chrome? google inbox is giving me a message that it is only supported on chrome and asks me to download.

You can use a 'user agent' extension to achieve that, there are a few on the Opera add-ons store or the Chrome store.
If you do choose to install a Chrome extension, you need to first install an extension from Opera add-ons called 'download chrome extension' first, which will then let you access the Chrome store (without the 'You need Chrome' message' and allow you to install most Chrome extensions.
