Which is the best version of Opera (EXCLUDING anything past 12.17) and why??

For those times I use "old" Opera (admittedly, less often these days), I prefer v12.14, largely because it seems a bit more "stable" than v12.16 or v12.17 and because I can still set StartPage as my default search engine. There are several things I demand in a browser, and a custom default search engine is one of them. The security flaws fixed in v12.15/16 and v12.17 don't loom as large to me as they might to others, and the sites I still view with v12.14 are mostly government weather sites and such... largely considered "safe". Plus, those infrequent times I might still use v12.14 to visit "unproven" sites, I always do it with Opera's JavaScript turned off and from within a tightly locked-down user account.

Indeed this has been covered in many posts already. Most recently in the thread "Why do I (you) still keep using older (v12) version?", which has now run its course and been closed (since it got wildly off-topic).
Some specific posts (from that thread), that you may have missed:
- pesala explains why he uses 11.64
- linuxmint7 suggests 12.14 has better site compatibility
- donq explains why he uses 10.10
- pqr3 explains why he uses 9.27 and 12.15
It is worth remembering that using old versions now may expose you to added security risks. Only the most recent 12.XX releases for each desktop platform (Windows, Mac and Linux) receive security patches. blackbird71 provided some interesting thoughts on this, in that very thread.
@smurfinaus Are you actually expecting to get much more out of this thread that has not been covered elsewhere? Or did you create it because you were unaware of previous discussions?

Opera 12.14 is the best. Opera 12.15+ has some flaws (bugs), probably because of poor quality control.
Also, Opera 11.64 do have some advantages in comparison with the 12.x.

Maybe you wish to explain why? That is what @smurfinaus actually asked for (see title). If people don't explain why they have chosen a particular version, I can't see how this thread is useful.

Sadly I do not really use a older version of Opera anymore.
BUT I still like to remember the functions and accessibility the old versions had.I was reading pqr3 comment on how he uses the "Notes" on the left sidebar. And I have to say, I was using them almost as he did, no so big and not so many, but yes they are and were a vital tool for my daily needs.
Just like the mail client incorporated into the browser.I still use one of the 11.xx versions on my netbook with winXP as everything else would totally kill the resources the small Dell Netbook has.
For me its not really a specific version I like or tend to use. But I ceased updating Opera after the removal of the filehosting, pic sharing capabilities.
Other dearly loved and used features where the sync between different Opera installations I had running (5 to be correct) and having the ability to keep on working on a different PC were u stopped a few hours ago on another.
What I never had issues with, was crashing. Until Opera sorted things out in multiple processes, from there every now and then things began to crash, which was very annoying. But I think that were also the 12 + versions.Oh and one thing I every totally loved about Opera. I never had to use any additional program, software, extension, widget or what so ever.
Never had to agree to 3rd party licenses or ToS and so on.
Opera natively had everything I was ever looking for (since Version 7 or 9) while being extremely fast on opening websites and navigating in them.So I do not really prefer one particular version, it is more the conglomerate of options and features in every Version (till 12) which I liked.
But if I had to name one, I think the 10 Versions are most dominantly on my mind for all the good reasons. -

The thread is not useful. As I posted earlier, it has been covered many times before. This thread is merely another duplicate and will degenerate (as threads of these types always do) into yet another rant against Opera. I honestly do not understand what people expect to get from such ridiculous threads as these. Why someone would knowingly choose an older, insecure version of the browser when the latest (either 12.17 OR 26) is available is beyond me but such is life. Please, moderator... consider closing this thread. It serves no useful purpose.

Seems to me that even Opera team members are able to get some information from such thread. Really, leushino - if people can explain, why they are using old versions, what are these specific properties, which some usres like, then this knowledge is quite valuable for software designers, developers etc.
I as developer am always interested, why people are using old versions of our financial software. Some people are even using over 20 year old DOS versions of our app... I could probably explain, why - although this goes very off-topic here (no information for Opera team). Well, speed and lack of confusing choices (streamlined usage pattern) are some reasons for our 'old-timers'; for browser (or other generic type application) lack of choices is usually not so good attribute. Speed (be it subjective or real) usually is

Indeed, useful information can be gleaned from a thread such as this, HOWEVER, as ruario and I both pointed out, there are multiple threads JUST LIKE THIS ONE saying the same thing. So, in fact, this thread does not serve any useful function.

...most of which (all?) were closed after your apparent requests. (I don't say "because" - I don't know that.)

Ok, now this thread is going off the rails.
@joshl previously you wrote:
I'm using a pre-.64 11**
To which I replied:

Perhaps you use your next post here to explain why, rather than try to start a fight with leushino?

I just like it. It's fully packed, the layout insanely customised...
What? It's not the browser Opera ASA call "Opera" now.
Peculiar features and "gestures" I use.
It's my first browser, it's [wise]user-friendly. If it lacks something, it's obvious there are other browsers on here. -

It's my first browser, it's [wise]user-friendly. ...In a sense, a person could argue that about all the Presto Opera versions. So, why specifically do you prefer 11.64 over its successor Presto 12.xx versions? I know @Pesala once had a thread in MyOpera listing a number of specific things that he felt made 11.64 the best Presto version... what are yours?

+1
They say, "third time's the charm", so maybe we will get an actual answer this time.

The only reason I can think of not to use 12.17 would be if you used the "Voice" feature on the older versions of Opera, which was eventually dropped IIRC when the third party provider of the system stopped supporting it.
Even if you have heavy customisation, as I have, updating to 12.17 shouldn't lose any of it.
It never has with me, I've been using Opera since version 7 and have never lost anything on an update (except Voice as I said.)

It never has with me, I've been using Opera since version 7 and have never lost anything on an update (except Voice as I said.)I recall that there were some changes made after v11.64 which prevented some of the earlier-version-compatible custom skins and buttons from working or showing things up properly... that, in turn, made it difficult to use certain custom button-sets and other tools. Something along that line was one of @Pesala's complaints back then, if I remember correctly. There was a fair amount of turmoil at that time about themes, skins, toolbar/personal-bar flexibility and such... but it didn't impact how I had Presto Opera set up, so I was able to migrate along - that is, up until the lock-down of the default search engine list starting with v12.15 and thereafter.

For me any 12.xx
I just need tab stacking and bookmarks side panel. Once it will be integrated in new Opera I will stop using old one.
I've seen a feature request for a side panel with a possibility to display extensions content, but opera devs don't care, and people like leushino just peace me off (he hijacks everyones threads, breaking rule 5 of this forum). This software and forum went down the drain, completely alienating old opera users... You can even ban me I don't care anymore -

I've seen a feature request for a side panel with a possibility to display extensions content, but opera devs don't care...Whoa... stop the stampede! There are a number of plausible reasons why panels haven't been added, and it's quite a leap to assert the devs simply "don't care". Not the least of which reasons is that amidst the mass of other things they're trying to do, adding panels may not loom important enough in comparison (yet). Moreover, even if they have decided to not add panels ever, that doesn't mean they don't care, it simply means they don't agree that it's important enough to the user base which they're trying to successfully target with their finite design resources.
We've all, as people, got to get over this idea that just because folks don't agree with us on something, they 'don't care' about it. There may be things in each of our lives that we care deeply about, but that, for whatever reasons important to each of us, we just can't do anything about.
