for me it now seems sporadic - everything opened just fine a little while ago but now I'm having the same problem - in fact, I can't even click on the Opera desktop icon to try to open it -

This work for me. Go to your profile folder (My is for example here C:\Users\Ohaha\AppData\Roaming\Opera Software\Opera Stable)
Delete files:
History
History Provider Cache
History-journal
Restart Opera. -

@ftfire Excellent info. Had the same as others, speed dial was super delayed in opening. This did the trick. Opening fine now. Saving info for future reference.

this old Luddite doesn't know how/where to find Profile page - can someone help? Thank you very much. (Nice to know I wasn't the only person with this problem!)

@leocg sorry but I don't understand. I followed your instructions to get to Profile page but did not see anything about what "ftfire" posted - I mean deleting History, History Provider Cache, History-journal. Sorry if I'm doing something wrong. You are very nice to try to help me.

@gp123 Morning after the "Opera crisis" the fix is still working.
For the folks contacting me about applying this solution there is confusion about finding the "profile page". This is the folder that stores attributes about the Opera program. For Windows 7 it can be found at:
C:\Users\name\AppData\Roaming\Opera Software\Opera Stable
For Mac and W10 users, should be something similar
Open this folder and delete the three "History" files cited. Then restart Opera. All should be OK.

If you go to Help / About and scroll down a little bit, you will find your install, profile and cache folders.

Problem seems solved (see other posts), but having invested about 4 hours on this and just about ready to switch back to Foxfire, I'm interested in knowing more:
What caused the problem?
Why did deleting 3 files fix the problem?
What assurance that this will not happen again?Anyone know the answers???
