A new release of Opera today, but sadly it still has this search in tabs nonsense.
So, for the past few days, I've been using Vivaldi. Bit of effort in setting it up but, after that, great, just as Opera used to be.
Like other older users, I go back to the paid for version of Opera, so this obstinate stance in imposing a "feature" which is only of use to a minority at the expense of a button most find useful is, to say the least, baffling.
Enjoy your obscure footnote in interweb history.

Well, it's obvious, they want us to use the (f-ing) sidebar. The more we use it the more money in their pocket... Vivaldi isn't a bad idea... Get the memo, first time we could get the button back, now the flag is disappeared.

Why this is necessary, I like hundreds of others, registered only to say that this is the dumbest update in the 15 years that I use Opera. I'm used to this button, so give me a chance to get it back.

Sidebar with hide switch is very right move in my opinion!

I was using this thing for years, reinstalled windows and now it is missing. Helpful "flag" option is missing too. I don't know why i would ever use the "search tab" option, this is a major step back indeed...

Until recently it was possible to open recently closed windows via the tab menu button. This does not seem to be available any more. I have the history button on the sidebar and when I click on it I can see all recently closed tabs but not recently closed windows.

Therefore my question is how I can open recently closed windows?

@hjstern I didn't know that this functionality was in the TabMenu. It seems that the old menu is 3x times more useful than the new one (maybe developers are shocked now a bit when they realize the whole functionality of TabMenu ).

@andrew84 I don't see anything like that in the settings. Where did they hide the sidebar setup? Ah nvm, found it. Why the hell would that only be available via right-click on the sidebar?! It should be in the Opera settings, where it belongs.
And how did you get that Show More button in the search in tabs modal? It doesn't show up for me.

I've also noticed that the recently closed section of the search-in-tabs BS feature doesn't show you your last 3 tabs, but it choses them for you. So on certain sites, if I closed them by accident and want to reopen them, they don't show up there, which is a regression from the previous recently closed tabs feature.

@peejay There's a paid version of Opera?! Does it have the recently closed tabs feature? I would buy it in a heartbeat.
Does Vivaldi have that feature at least? In that case I'd probably switch to Vivaldi.
Ok Vivaldi has it, I'm gone. Bye Opera!

This is really frustrating, I've been using Opera for almost two decades and stuck with them through all the changes (well I briefly switched to Chrome during their transition to Chromium until the new Opera had matured enough). This is not the first time they've removed a crucial feature but it's getting harder and harder to stick with Opera if they just keep removing the things that make them better than the rest.

#search-in-closed-tabs-show-more flag (currently available in 71 ver.) must be enabled.

Unfortunately, it is already clear that the developers are not interested in what is happening here.
This has been going on for many months.
It's as if nothing happens, and it doesn't matter.
It is a lot of users who are expressing themselves clearly and with arguments because they have taken a key option from them.
                            And nothing.
Since Opera has not even given a signal, a few words, to contain the numerous and respectful claims.
Not here or anywhere, not even through moderators.

The moderator of this thread has not provided contention, has been unkind in several responses and has taken sides against these users on this issue.
This is also unfortunate and does not speak highly of how Opera is treating its users.
This, @leocg, I raise it with all due respect, it is nothing personal.

                            This is all disappointing.
Especially to those of us who love Opera from the beginning, since many years.
Even many users are already announcing that they are going to switch to another browser.
For my work I must use Firefox, Edge, Chrome to always do tests, I know them. But I always kept choosing Opera as the default because from the beginning I felt that they cared about its users.

Today for the first time I felt that I should start looking the other way.
                            And that's ugly, it's sad.
I haven't tried Vivaldi, but I know it's from the old Opera developer.
Maybe there I will find that feeling that Opera gave me when I started using it many years ago.
Sorry for the catharsis, but this is what happens to me.
                            Although it does not interest.

That is not true. They even are bringing/brought recently closed tabs back to Search in Tabs

It is a lot of users who are expressing themselves clearly and with arguments because they have taken a key option from them.

For sure it's a considerable amount of users but still a very low percentage of Opera users. Even though, developers are taking that very low percentage of users into consideration.

Since Opera has not even given a signal, a few words, to contain the numerous and respectful claims.

Opera, except for very few situations, never did that in more than 25 years and I see no reason for them to have started doing it now.
People complaining about something removed or added or changed have being happening since the beginning.

And moderators are just users like the others, they don't work for nor represent Opera at all.

The moderator of this thread has not provided contention, has been unkind in several responses and has taken sides against these users on this issue.

Like I said, moderators are users and, as users, they can and will take a side in discussions if they want to.

I just want to thank this thread for telling me about Vivaldi.

I've been using Opera since back when you had to pay for it (which I gladly did).

One of the reasons I loved it was the fact that everything was customizable, which is something that has being going away ever since the Presto engine went bye-bye.

Another reason was the small, innovative features that set it apart from the mainstream browsers, like mouse gestures, links and info panel, Dragonfly, recently closed tabs, completely custom search engines, etc.

Many of those things have already disappeared into the sunset, or replaced by more generic functionality copied from other browsers, and like many people in this thread, the recently closed tabs functionality just being removed (twice) was the straw that broke the camel's back for me. It's a feature I use instinctively, and not having it in that spot hopelessly slows down my browsing.

Within 10 minutes of installing Vivaldi, I was back at the browser Opera used to be.

Sad to say goodbye, but as others have pointed out, Opera has been steadily becoming more 'our-way-or-no-way'. And if I wanted that, I'd be using Firefox or Chrome. I understand it is a free product, but I was happily paying for it before it became free, and would gladly still do so if it meant getting the old, innovative Opera back, instead of this paid-for-by-Google Chrome cosplayer.

It's enough of a personal favourite that I'd ditch Opera in a heartbeat to go to another browser that has it.

                                  Vivaldi has it.
A few days ago I was testing it, even though I did not want to leave Opera ... but several reasons were added to start giving way to another browser (For my work I also have to use Chrome, Firefox and Edge daily, but I always preferred Opera for many years)
And now Vivaldi has reminded me again of that Opera that little by little was lost ... that's why I will continue with Vivaldi.
So far it's going very well.

@itsacon The same thing that you are describing in your post has happened to me.
And the old and innovative Opera that I loved, I think I'm bringing it back to Vivaldi.
So this straw that broke the camel's back, at least it seems to me to have served a good thing.
Then I will continue with Vivaldi.
                                    Thank you.

I use this feature every day. If it is gone it's just one more step that opera themselves decides to take to drive me towards another browser. If you don't want users, so be it.
