He wants to change that "mail.google.com" tile for the gmail icon. I'm wondering why he didn't - or doesn't the URL match?

Not the question ... if the speed dial is for mail.google.com but they redirect you to to a different URL (say, a Russian version instead of the international version) then you're changing the icon on a different bookmark.
