Opera updated itself without my permission and now will not work with my OS

I did not upgrade Opera on purpose because it kept telling me it would not work with my OS. Last night, upon shutting down, apparently it updated ITSELF and now will not work. How do I go back to a previous version that does work? OS is mac 10.9.5; and why would it do that when it "knew" it would not work with this OS?

@aerdfgafdsafads @matilf There is problem with our autoupdate server which started to serve new version to unsupported systems on macOS. To work around this please run following command in console: "defaults write com.operasoftware.Opera OPDisableAutoUpdate true". You can download last version for OSX 10.9 here: https://ftp.opera.com/ftp/pub/opera/desktop/49.0.2725.64/mac/
Sorry for this inconvenience. -

How? There's only a search section to input text.

@aerdfgafdsafads You copy it and put it in your terminal box (find terminal: Click the Finder icon in your dock. 2. Click Go. 3. Click Utilities. 4. Double-click Terminal.) With that open, you go to the link mgeffro mentions, you download the setup and then it worked for me. (hope the names are right, my Mac speaks Dutch

Me too! Apparently the last updated Opera version - which should well have known my mac's OS version, 10.9, now automatically destroyed itself on my mac because it no longer works. Must I kiss Opera goodbye although I remain steadfast in my desire TO REMAIN WITH MAC 10.9 !??!

Mine reset again to being broken. But I ran the command so hopefully this fixed their issue. The reset happened yesterday so the fix wasn't in for my machine.
