There are some popular messengers.
Are you going to add them statically?
I think that it should be installable like sidebar extension .

I can't log in with Messenger.com. The page still always the same. Only with the link to the play store for Android.

Opera Developer 45 seems to work fine - except that having activated the sidebar to use Facebook Messenger (an excellent feature) there seems to be no way to get it to retract. With OD 44 I was able to click on the FBM icon to toggle showing/hiding it, but that does not seem to work on OD 45. It would be great to see that reinstated on the next update (I think the same comment holds for WhatsApp too).

Welcome to Opera forums @Phillip21!
There is an arrow left down to hide the sidebar or Ctrl + Shift + M.

Hi @phillip21 @zalex108, regarding the shortcuts for the Side Bar, there are two separate functions available:
-
Show sidebar: no shortcut added by default, but you can assign it in
opera:settings/configureCommands
> Show sidebar, -
Toggle sidebar's recently used messenger: it has default shortcut Ctrl(Command on Mac)+Shift+M, which you can change also in
opera:settings/configureCommands
.

Unfortunately the link preview/hover/popup in the bottomleft corner is gone.
Internet feels a lot unsafer, if you don't know where you go.
Missing it a lot.

Doesn't that mean that you allow flash versions with known and unpatched vulnerabilities.

I'd like to see Skype, Twitter and/or Discord added to the side bar. I love this update so far, but I use neither WhatsApp or Messenger. It looks really nice from what I've seen of it, and I'm tempted to switch over to only using the Opera version of those apps if they're added.
I'm curious if perhaps there couldn't in the future be a way to add other apps to the side bar using extensions, or perhaps even a built-in feature?

Works here.
Does not work here
The platform is Ubuntu 14.04, although I guess this should not be related.
To make it close, I have to right click on the sidebar, disable FB messenger (to close the pan) and enable it again (to get the button back)

Try with a Clean Profile, here is the "How to" Frequently Asked Questions (Opera for Windows) .
Just adjust to the OS paths and the appropriate file explorer.

I suspect this, because before this update, the pan was also automatically collapsed whenever I clicked outside of it, and it does not work anymore neither. So may be the issue is related to the way the focus is handled since this Opera update.

More annoying, I don't get any notification of new messages. If there are new messages, when I click the button, I get a blank pan where no conversation is selected (was not the same before). When I clicked on the conversation, I saw new messages, but there was no indicators of these: no sound and no red big dot.
It's broken now, while it was working before (I don't remember what was the previous Opera version).
I'm giving up with this feature, and will fallback on the messenger in a tab instead.
