adding the functions of a fully fledged download manager to increase downloading spead

  • the downloading speed of opera is commendable but their does of us that download really large files like 1gb and above that's why I believe that adding multi treading function and other functions of full fledged download manager will be very useful to everyone

  • Maybe but it also may make the server to overload and harm many users.

Also, there are that many people downloading large files on a cellphone to justify adding such feature?

  • @leocg Seriously!?? Of course many people download large files.

Well, I don't do it - at least not on my phone - and I really don't know that many people who does it that often.

I really don't think that downloading 1GB files is something often done by many users.

  • Why would you want to download such big files on your phone?

  • @mbaluta, @leocg:

i do sometimes pull gb-sized linux or haiku images on my smartphone when free wifi is available, using uc-mini.

not wanting to put the load (with associated costs and performance demands) on opera's servers, and in the past om's download manager struggled to pull large files.

  • Files over 15MB should be downloaded from web server directly, so it's not causing any load on our servers. UC Mini downloads files using multiple concurrent connections which can only help if the web server is limiting download speed.

i wasn't aware of that, mucho thanks. just checked with network log, opera mini connects directly to the file source and so does uc mini. one wonders how they achieve the claimed download speed gains via my 32 kbit/s connection.

still, i'll continue to use their downloader as from past experience it seemed more resilient.

many thanks again for the clarification.
