      anybody can see my passwords

      They can only do that if you log into your Windows account and then walk away from your computer. If they are logging into a different Windows account on the same system they wont be able to see them. Logging in and walking away is the computer equivalent of leaving your car running in the parking lot with the doors open while you run into the store for something.

      what happens if somebody gets hold of my laptop

      If they control your physical machine its game over. Period. Having Opera hide the passwords inside its settings menu means nothing because they could just bust into Windows, rip out the files where that data is stored and crack it open at their leisure. It takes awhile but its not hard. Its kind of like safes. If you ever look into buying one that must certainly don't guaranty that they wont get cracked open, they only give you a garuanty that it would take a professional so many minutes to break into one. Thats right, minutes. a 60 minute safe is considered pretty good at the consumer level.

      Isn't this common sense

      When you know what hackers are capable of its pretty laughable actually. Its like that little chain people get for their front door so they can open it a few inches but not let someone in. Unless they, you know, push on it or kick it or apply any kind of force to it.

        I am VERY surprised to see that anybody can see my passwords simply by going to Setting, Manage Passwords, and click on Show

        By default Opera asks for your OS password before reveal anything.

        Anyway, someone would have to:

        • Gain physical access to your computer;
        • Know your OS username and password to access you account (or be very lucky to get your computer while you are logged in);
        • Know Opera and how to show stored passwords

        Surely there should be one central password to activate any of the stored password? Isn't this common sense, yet nobody seems to implement this!

        That password is your OS password.

        Btw, it's the same in Chrome.

          thanks all, but actually knew about that, I actually never had a OS password deeming it not so necessary, and actually still think so! But I did make a password to try out this feature, and lo and behold, it still does not ask me for any password before revealing passwords! Now what?

              Well, if you really care about privacy and security, then you should have one.

              It would also help preventing data loss if someone using your computer do something wrong.

                Have you changed any flag?

                Maybe you need to try a reinstall.

                  I have a password set up on my OS (Windows XP SP3), although the OS is set to log on automatically.
                  I'm not asked for it when I look at my saved passwords on Opera Developer, it just shows them!
                  :eek:

                  Still in mourning for Opera 12.........

                    Check specifically

                    chrome://flags/?search=passw#password-manager-reauthentication

                      Like I said, it does not ask for password before revealing passwords. Is this a bug on the xp version?
                      Plus, what I meant to say before was, that ideally, whenever Opera enters a password for you automatically, it should ask for a quick password first. My idea is that you have to press a certain key within 5 secs, and you only get few tries!

                        Checked that out, and the setting is on its default.
                        Disable prompting is disabled, which should mean that it does prompt (how I hate double negatives in things like that, couldn't be more confusing!)
                        I did try the "enabled" setting, no change to the behaviour.
                        🙂

                                  Yep.

                                  So maybe it depends on how you access your desktop for the password to be asked or not.

                                      But you need to type it to login into your desktop?

                                      After a reinstall? Maybe Opera only gets the info when being installed.
