Hi @albert71292, after you have enabled it in the flags, you need to tick the checkbox on the left of the "Enable search box in the address bar" option in Settings > User interface (to be able to see this option, please make sure, that you have enabled "Show advanced settings" option under the "Advanced settings" section).
"Enable search box in the address bar" isn't showing up there in Developer 38, even though I have "Show Advanced Settings" AND "Always show power user settings" checked. The option DOES appear, however, in the newest Stable and Beta builds.

Separate search box in address bar not showing up even when "Enabled" in opera://flags/.
Have you enabled it on settings?
Finally got the option to appear after uninstalling, then reinstalling the browser.

New build - Opera developer 38.0.2205.0
The change log, and the announcement: "Free VPN integrated in Opera for better online privacy".
"Today, we want to share with you another big thing that you will first see in the developer channel for Opera for computers.
We are the first major browser maker to integrate an unlimited and free VPN, or virtual private network.
Now, you donât have to download VPN extensions, or pay for VPN subscriptions to access blocked websites, and to shield your browsing when on public Wi-Fi.Why we are adding free VPN in Opera
Bringing this important privacy improvement marks another step in building a browser that matches up to peopleâs expectations in 2016. When you think about it, many popular options offered by desktop browsers today were invented (quite frequently by Opera) many years ago. The innovation energy in the industry has been recently so focused on mobile, even if the desktop is still thriving.
In January, we were reviewing our product plans, and we realized that people need new features in order to browse the web efficiently in 2016. It also became apparent to us that what people need are not the same features that were relevant for their browsers ten years ago. This is why we today have more engineers than ever before working on new features for our desktop browser.
So far we have the native ad blocker. And, weâre introducing another major feature in just a matter of a few weeks; a native, unlimited and free VPN client, right inside your browser!
Enhanced privacy online with Operaâs free VPN
According to Global Web Index, more than half a billion people (24% of the worldâs internet population) have tried or are currently using VPN services. According to the research, the primary reasons for people to use a VPN are:
- To access better entertainment content (38%)
- To keep anonymity while browsing (30%)
- To access restricted networks and sites in my country (28%)
- To access restricted sites at work (27%)
- To communicate with friends/family abroad (24%)
- To access restricted news websites in my country (22%)
According to the research, young people are leading the way when it comes to VPN usage, with almost one third of people between 16-34 having used a VPN.

alt="Free, built-in VPN in Opera for computers" width="620" height="349" border="10" /></a>Better than traditional VPNs
Until now, most VPN services and proxy servers have been limited and based on a paid subscription. With a free, unlimited, native VPN that just works out-of-the-box and doesnât require any subscription, Opera wants to make VPNs available to everyone.
Thatâs why Operaâs built-in free VPN feature is easy to use. To activate it, Mac users just need to click the Opera menu, select âPreferencesâ and toggle the feature VPN on, while Windows and Linux users need to go to the âPrivacy and Securityâ section in âSettingsâ and enable VPN there. A button will appear in the browser address field, from which the user can see and change location (more locations will appear later), check whether their IP is exposed and review statistics for their data used. Itâs free and unlimited to use, yet it offers several must-have options available in paid VPNs, such as:
- Hide your IP address â Opera will replace your IP address with a virtual IP address, so itâs harder for sites to track your location and identify your computer. This means you can browse the web more privately.
- Unblocking of firewalls and websites â Many countries, schools and workplaces block video-streaming sites, social networks and other services. By using a VPN you can access your favorite content, no matter where you are.
- Public Wi-Fi security â When youâre surfing the web on public Wi-Fi, intruders can easily sniff data. By using a VPN, you can improve the security of your personal information.
Let us know what you think
Download Opera 38 developer, and give the free, unlimited VPN a try. BTW: beyond our native ad blocker and VPN, you can expect more exciting features to come very soon.
Other changes
Video pop-up
This feature has been extensively described here. It is now present in developer, too. Enjoy!
Add your own photo as theme
Some time ago, we introduced the âCreate your themeâ option in the theme manager. It turned out, though, that the option was not visible enough for users. Now just go to Customize startpage and click â+â button and use your own photos to create a theme.
Extension button visible on the Speed Dial side panel
All extension users will have the extension manager always handy. The extension icon is visible on side panel on the left side of the Speed Dial page.
Support for adding a personal ad blocker list
Our ad blocker now contains support for adding your own block lists. To add your own custom list file, head to Settings and click the âCustom Block Listsâ button in the ad-blocking section (note that âShow advanced settingsâ from the âBrowserâ panel must be enabled to see the button).
The lists have to be in EasyList-style format, and you can use existing lists such as the EasyList affiliate lists to ensure you get to block all that you want. As a reminder, Opera itself provides a block list based on the publicly available EasyList and EasyPrivacy.
Speed Dial improvements
Did you ever remove your speed dial accidentally? Now you wonât. Youâll notice three little dots on hover in place where close button used to be. It has the same content as context menu, so you can open, edit or remove speed dial."

New build - Opera developer 38.0.2213.0, the change log, and the announcement
"Hi, today weâve got some update on the developer stream for you. It contains a lot of fixes on features weâve recently implemented and still developing. Please see the following highlights:

The detach button is now available even when video is covered by an overlay content. This means you can detach videos embedded on the site (DNA-52223) and within, for example, the iframe tag.
-
On sites other than YouTube, there should be a sliding toolbar visible asking if you really want to detach the video window.
VPN updates
-
A nasty crash on startup when VPN is enabled is now fixed.
-
A lot of US fixes, such as: moving exposed IP number to the right (OS X), showing IP address in popup (OS X), Address bar not malformed, when enabling VPN for first time (OS X).
Other updates
-
Windows x64 users â we have an Opera 64-bit build for you this time!
-
A number of Personal News fixes and improvements, for example tiles visibility and arrangement has been improved.
-
Also, several fixes for the ad-blocking feature, such as:
- The issue where some pages were unusable after turning ad-blocking on, is now gone.
- Now, all added custom files are visible after restart â DNA-52878 fix.
- Watched videos are not prevented from being marked as such.
- H264 videos are now working on Linux again."

Dear Sir/Madame,
Today I lost 20 open tabs when I inadvertently closed Opera browser, they were all tabs on subjects I was researching.
I know I can go through the laborious process of restoring one by one from History.
Is there a way to "undo last action" or can you create "restore" button which Chrome browser has,
which I stopped using because it used to crash so much.I feel that today's and future users of Opera would much appreciate that
Thanking you in anticipation
Boris

Windows 7 Ultimate on 64-bit PC
I rarely use the "mail" dedicated key on my keyboard, as I start my preferred email client (Thunderbird)from the taskbar.
However, I tried using it today, and was surprised that it launched Opera Developer 38.0.2213.0 rather than Thunderbird. A quick look at file associations shows that "mailto" protocol had been reassigned to Opera Developer.
After changing "mailto" back to the Thunderbird default, I started up Opera Dev. again, which immediately grabbed back the "mailto" assignment.
I want to choose which email client I use, and therefore I'd like to know how to stop Opera Dev. from doing this.

Control Panel > Default Programs > Set Default Programs > Select Opera > Set the defaults for this program > Mark all but Mailto
Then select Thunderbird and make sure Mailto is selected.
I guess it may help.

Hi,
I'm inside network where all ports except 80 an 443 are blocked (proxy is used to reach outside URLs). Do you plan to support such case by your built-in VPN service?

Control Panel > Default Programs > Set Default Programs > Select Opera > Set the defaults for this program > Mark all but Mailto

I guess it may help.I've done that several times, but the problem is that every time Opera Dev. starts up, it changes the mailto default back to itself from whatever I have set it to (in this case, Thunderbird).
It's obviously rewriting the mailto entry in the Registry, and I imagine that it's because Opera might again have a built-in email client. That's fair enough, but my email system in Thunderbird is carefully set up to filter, classify and archive "stuff", and that's the client I plan to keep using for the moment. I'm happy to use an Opera email client (as used to be the case) under some circumstances, but I do not want it to be the default mailto - not least because it will have no connection to my Thunderbird Address Books, where outgoing email addresses are stored by default. -

The problem arose because of Settings>Privacy>Handlers, where Gmail was set as a handler site. Delete that and it's now OK.
