Adding search engines is really tedious if you plan on adding them at all.

Sure you can figure out the search string, but most of the browsers either have a way to add them with a mouseclick or automatically add the search engine as the user visits the page (chrome)

Microsoft has a page to add search engines to internet explorer, and then there's Mycroft Project, which works in both firefox, chrome, and presumably internet explorer.

      Chromium supports OpenSearch

Why Opera is the outlier here is just odd, especially since it would give them an relatively user friendly way to add search engines. Especially since I assume Google already worked on OpenSearch support, and it could presumably be ported over.

My suggestion would be to add an icon in the address bar that denotes a search engine can be added to opera, whenever a Opensearch xml file is located on the website, like rss. The icon could be clicked on to pull up an Add Search Engine dialog in Opera.

The relatively friendly way in Opera is to right-click in the search box on the page and choose Create search engine from the menu.

Doesn't always work. An example would be seekingalpha.com. Normally in this case I would go to mycroft:

Well, I post to support this suggestion hoping to make it visible again, we really need an Opensearch support, Seriously why not suport it if it's already support in Chromium?

I simply cannot comprehend why this feature is not already baked into Opera. You can see here that OpenSearch is already supported at the Chromium level.

I would guess that they have very low (or even none at all) interest in implementing it.

I don't understand why that would be the case. It couldn't be that difficult to accomplish, considering the functionality appears to be included with the open-source code for Chromium.

If you think a little i'm sure you will get the point. 🙂

It's not that they can't do it but they probably don't want to do it.

It would be great if the developers actually cared enough checked these forums and comment on user feedback. Why is it that there is no place to report bugs or send feedback directly to the development team?

Well, this is an users'forum. Maybe in the Desktop Team blog you have better luck receiving feedback from someone from Opera.

There is one. But the subject of this topic is not a bug.

or send feedback directly to the development team?

They get feedback from here and from the comments on the blog. And also from social networks.
