      Hello,

I miss previews in the new startpage (speeddial). That's confusing, because I can't see the website.

For example: The desktop team blog of Opera and this forum have the same icon in the new start page and I have to move over the icons with my mouse, to see the name of the site.

Is there a plan to get the preview back?

      Thank you.

Open opera://flags/#experimental-start-page and set do Disabled. Restart Opera.

@angiesdom I think that's obvious, the point is when the new page becomes final and mandatory.

The new "Coast-like" icons certainly make the SD beautiful, for the main entries I keep at the top, but for my saved pages through "Save all open tabs as Speed Dial group" and other items from the same site and even for other misc items outside of folders the preview thumbnail is much more useful than the luxurious icon / page title to see exactly what pages are those. I need a solution to this.

            Exactly the same case here.
Same thing happened when they redesigned Opera Mobile about a year ago and no one listened - no way to tell apart different pages of the same domain, but on mobile is even worse as you can't hover with a mouse to read the title...

I'm all in for such a unified look, but now it's form over function - if it was possible to customize what part of the address gets drawn in that thumbnail, we could have both the unified look and the ability to tell where each thumbnail points...
The best for me would be the option to choose between these labels (but address-aware, because "Opera.com" tells me nothing) and the old-style page previews for each SD thumbnail.

                Exactly! That's the point!

Because of that, I opened this discussion and I hope, that the developers hear us/me. The new (experimental) start page, is (in my opinion) unusable without previews.

We need 2 options for the new start page:

                  1. enable / disable preview
                  2. enable / disable folder labels, site labels

because it is really hard to find your links, when you have a ton of start page entries.

My speed dial looks like this:

                      http://sta.sh/0bt8dx0hv6c

Each link is for a different artists page like artist01.deviantart.com, artist02.deviantart.com, and so on.
All with the same icon, no labels, searching for someone is a nightmare.

They allow you to select am image for bookmarks - why not speed dial?

I have bookmarked several pages on Flickr, they look the same in the new speed dial.

Nothing more, nothing less! But it was said thousands of times, so I hope that guys from Opera heard us... 😞

I have found one website that has an actual icon on their speed dial.

The sourcecode of the page contains the following:

                              <link rel="shortcut icon" type="image/x-icon"  href="http://wp.traceyroad.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/07/design8-3_plain-gray-01-150x150.png">

So if you include a similar link in your page's headers, you could get an icon as well.

I think the main problem is that bookmarks and speed dial are nearly the same thing in current implementation.

In Opera 15+, speed dial has been designed as a way to replace bookmarks. But there were some flaws, you all know the story, and they decided to re-implement a "bookmark" feature. But IMHO, the strategy is now very confuse for a lot of users.

Kroppy, from what I see in your example, if you want to follow Opera's "new way of doing things", you should use bookmarks for your deviantart pages.
If you have a lot of things you want to store, to differentiate, to search and find later, different pages from the same website, etc... you should use bookmarks.

SpeedDial should only be used for a very (very!) few number of links, the most importants, the one you check 50% of the time when you open a new tab. All the rest should now be stored in bookmarks.

This is the way I see things, and it may explain why Opera does not implement preview again in speed dial: if so, why would we need bookmarks?
But I agree, there must be a way to optimize all this, it is too confusing for the moment. SpeedDial and bookmarks must really differ, or merge.
