Just gave it a try with Dragon and while it does create the separate search bar, it does it in a new tab page, so not exactly the same thing. I guess it's the closest we are going to get seeing as no webkit or chromium browser has a separate search bar. Monoculture is bad

If you have a favorite search engine, typing one or two letters in advance of a search is nothing. It's time to worry about what is worth worrying about and not mere nothings. Otherwise, haha, one would go mad.

As for the separate search box, you don't need it with Disconnect Plus. Your search request is not tracked to you. Of course, Opera does come in the Speed Dial with a separate google search bar, but I deleted it, as it takes up too much space, and accomplishes nothing.

Hi, new poster, but longtime Opera user here. If the issue is that someone only wants to use one alternative search engine then I agree, typing a single letter before the search term is not a big deal. However as well as the autocomplete issue, another reason people like a separate search box is to give greater choice of searches. In Opera 12 I have 12 different engines to choose for different purposes. (I used to have 18) As well as Duckduckgo, Startpage and ixquick, engines like Ask, Blekko (my current favourite for its tidy results), Zoo (formerly metacrawler),and Yandex give great results, and there are also custom searches for particular sites, image searches etc. It is far easier to find these in a drop down menu than trying to remember code letters or keywords for all of them.
Finally, to say there are five existing possibilities which should be enough for most people is not really accurate. Two - Amazon and Wikipedia - only give results from one website each.

Grierzo, first off, welcome to the forum.

And I do see your point. There was a security reason why Opera limited itself to the five defaults (something, I believe about the risk of hijacked search engines, but I cannot for the life of me remember exactly what it was. Perhaps someone else who recalls can post that here.

Still there are really 😉 not so difficult, albeit perhaps old fashioned workarounds. If you want to use A LOT of alternative searches (the vast majority of people, allow me to propose, do not) (They usually stick with a favorite search engine, whether it be one of the common ones or another),
you could, as has already been noted in this forum, add the searches to Opera by going to the website and right clicking on the search bar, then right clicking on the opera address bar and finding the one or two letter code. And then (Haha, it sounds like an advertisement: I do it the old fashioned way) paste a little note on your dekstop with the search codes, or have them in your top desk drawer for easy and immediate access when needed. if you do some of your searches with the codes, you may well have the most frequently utilized easily memorized.

There's always the ideal world, and then the world of workarounds. In this area of searches, I personally don't think a workaround is a big deal.

As far as I know you can add searchs and choose which one you want to be the pattern. You can the search engine when you are going to search something.

              Look

I completely agree with you. I had(and still do in Firefox)10 search engines with 6-8 of them being used daily. People are different and we work differently. Old Opera was great for that and it was the main reason I used it. IE wasn't just a terrible browser because it was slow and a security hole but because of the lack of options. Chrome came along and in spite of it's speed and extensions, is still very restrictive. Those who used Opera tolerated the site incompatibilities for a reason. It's no surprise then why new Opera is getting so much flack.

alreadybanned: why so negative all the time? I mean seriously... if Opera doesn't float your boat, why not find something that does?

Sidneyneto: that's pretty cool and informative. Thanks for pointing that out. I'm sure "most" readers will appreciate it.

I've already stated that I have. You and a few others love to complain about those you perceive as complainers, oh the irony. I'm a long time Opera user so I'm still holding out hope but I don't view things with rose coloured glasses either. A spade is a spade and I am calling it as such. If that's being negative what does attacking posters classify you as?

By the way for all the doomsters about Opera, an April PC Magazine report sees Opera leading the supposed major internet browsers in 3 of 6 benchmark tests

Ah, Lem29, but the "vast majority of people" don't use Opera! We chose Opera because of all its features, ability to customise everything etc. I'm hopeful that some of that ability is returning bit by bit. But I do like your hi-tech suggestion of a note with the list of codes. I never thought of that! 🙂

Actually, the way alreadybanned describes it above was the actual process I used: "the ability to type in a query and then select the search engine to use" I would often type the query look at the drop down list and then choose the best search for it. Can't do that with prefixes.

Opera is not a positive experience right now, I don't think those who have issue with it are hiding that fact. However, those who make it personal while wearing some sort of mask of being a pillar are only deluding themselves. Negative is negative, so there really is no point in trying to pretty yours up. Pointing it out in others doesn't overshadow yours, it is what it is.

Benchmark tests are the go to argument from Webkit lovers so this comes as no surprise, it's a broken record really. Restricting the customization of the browser forces people to assimilate their browsing and work behaviours. Some don't mind while others do, that's life, you will always have opposites. Forcing silent updates however is rather Orwellian and now means that the browser will always be contacting "home", but that is a subject for another thread

Can always count on you being your pompous self. Your experience and opinions are just that, YOURS, and they in no way supersede anyone else's. The problem is that you can't accept that and feel the need to address posters rather than just speaking about the browser which inevitably results in a childish back and forth. well done

Can always count on your negativity and hanging about where you're not really wanted. Go play in some traffic, alreadybanned. Your very moniker indicates that you know very well your opinions will not be appreciated in the Opera forum and that you EXPECT to be banned (and if I were moderator, you'd be history, sonny).

We just have to keep flagging the spam posts... eventually, they'll tire of the wasted effort after it becomes apparent their trash keeps getting speedily dumped. Forum user vigilance and rapid mod actions will generally keep a forum clean - even with robo-spam and cheap spam labor.

Probably not. I refuse to click on any dynamic link unless I know the poster from experience and the URL upon examination appears credible. These spammers are getting sneaker.
