Maybe it could be possible with the islands. Like, make the whole island also connect like that, but with a different colour and the selected tab with the same colour. If it's not the selected island, let the island look like they do now, floating
I agree, that could make it more visually pleasing.

I don't understand why there should be so big gapes above and below the tabs. Tab's height should equal tab island's height. And inside tab island the tab can be slimmer. https://forums.opera.com/post/323532
I don't understand why I have to suffer even if I don't use tab islands at all.

Problems with window size and website scrolling. The developers did not make the Opera window full screen and now we have that the page scroll column (1 pic)on the side has a couple of pixels. Therefore, now, when we try to quickly move the mouse cursor to the side and drag the slider down, we pull the Opera window itself and drag it across the entire desktop. Bravo.
And the second rounding of the page working area, are you serious(2 pic)? On some sites this garbage is killing books/numbers. I wonder if the development department that sits there is managed by a VERY effective manager?

I have been forced to update to the new Opera, and the new interface is unbearable, a lot of wasted space, on my small laptop it is unbearably uncomfortable, poorly implemented styles in some menus, and a long etcetera. Quick Access... For God's sake! What a fright...
Much to my regret, I have my world set up in Opera, but if they don't fix this visual disaster, I will necessarily have to migrate to another browser. It will be painful, but more painful is having to endure this disastrous design.
Question: Was it developed by interns? -

@gustavomolina Yes interns were involved. They escaped from a looney bin and were hired by Opera's equally looney management. In truth, Opera is now owned by the Chinese. Go figure.

@gustavomolina if you have a 1080p screen on your laptop, it may be set to 125% screen in the settings. I have a 14'' 1080p display on my work laptop. To counter the issue of interface taking up too much space (in all software), what I did was to change the display settings to 100% and using zoom in the browser for making the content still have a good size, while the interface taking less space
I agree with you though. They should offer a compact design option without these margin shenanigans

@darthgtb Unfortunately my laptop screen is 1366x768. And there's no way to make it fit without ruining something else. Also, why do we have to adapt to lousy interface design? In my opinion, I have two problems with this new appearance, technically it fails miserably in the ergonomic section, aesthetically (personal taste) it makes my eyes hurt. For me it has stopped being a pleasant experience, and I continue with Opera merely because I have my world set up in this browser. In the past I fell in love with Opera with the Opera 12 Internet suite, I used it until I couldn't anymore, I didn't like the new direction they had taken, so I went to other browsers, then they tricked me again, but now I I am realizing that I have a toxic relationship with Opera. They make very abrupt paradigm shifts, and they almost never listen to their users.

@gustavomolina me too. I left Opera a few versions after they moved to the current engine back in v12 or v13 and started using Firefox. About 6 years ago or something, I went back into a Chromium browser. This time it was Yandex Browser. This one is a Russian fork from Chromium Opera, which made about every trademark functionality of Opera better, but I had a few fundamental issues with them, so I decided going back to Opera proper last year.
This rebranding brought so many bugs, I moved again. This time to Edge, because I'm a software developer and now I need to keep Chrome and Firefox clean for testing my stuff. After they fixed most of the deal breaking bugs, I'm back here.
Right now, I have a long list of requests for Opera to work on, but I think it's useable enough for me not to move again for now. The tab island thing actually even helps with my work cycle
When I get the time, I'll offer them a suggestion on how it could actually look good though

You can't change the whole OS setting for Opera, then every other program is smaller than you want.

I will not put in effort to get used to a new browser just for security. I'm sick to death of security. Whoever invented https is an idiot. It causes no end of problems when it's magically dangerous to access a website which is 1 minute out of date for something which was ok for a full year.
