@hasiok Strange. Did you check if Google is really your default search engine? When you start typing something to do a search, what logo/favicon shows up in the left of address bar?

I have the same issue. Google is selected as my defualt browser but it still searches in Yahoo. Even when I type in the search bar at the top of the "Speed Dial" page, which has the Google Icon next to it it still searches in Yahoo. I've tried chaning it back and forth but no luck.

I've also noticed something else strange. Whenever I search something it closes the tab and opens another tab to the left of the previous tab (if I have multiple open). Idk if this is in some way related.

After updating Opera GX, whenever i use the search bar it searches using Yahoo instead of Google, despide Google being set as the default search engine. In addition, going to google.com and searching from there takes me to a Yahoo result page. Resetting the Opera settings fixed the issue, however the issue has returned in less than a week.

Any extensions? By itself, Opera couldn't be sending searches from Google's homepage to Yahoo, so either an extension or external program is doing it.

@ziutkownik said in Searching on Yahoo even with Google set as default:

                  App for Instagram with Direct

What's the URL to that extension?

I don't understand either, one day opera GX just started to use yahoo instead of google and I don't know if it is a glitch or intentional or if there is a fix for it. If there is a fix, it would be nice to know.

@theofficialfcq54321 You probably got a malware. Disable all extensions and check your system with an antivirus.

I have all of my preferences set to use google for all of my searching and everything but GX will only use bing or yahoo when I try to search things.

If your search engine keeps changing to Yahoo, it may be due to the browser hijacker virus. Hackers use the Yahoo search redirect virus to earn revenue generated by clicks on Yahoo.

@bunny17 Scan your system with the free version of Malwarebytes and remove all your extensions at the URL opera://extensions. Make sure no extensions come back after a restart of Opera.

Also, after you get rid of the issue in other browsers, if needed, download the Opera GX installer, goto the URL opera://about, take note of the "install" path, close Opera, uninstall Opera (do not choose to delete your data when uninstalling), delete the install folder (it will remain), launch the installer, click "options", review all the options and install.

Also, in "C:\Users\yourusername\AppData", look in both the root of the "Roaming" and "Local" folders for a weirdly-named folder that has a manifest.json file in it and delete the folder.

Also look in "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Google\Chrome\Extensions" and "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Google\Chrome\Extensions" in the Windows registry. Make sure there are no IDs in there that force Chrome to automatically install a malware extension. These entries won't affect Opera, but still check.

Look for something similar at "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Edge" and "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Edge\Extensions".
Same thing at "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\WOW6432Node\Google\Chrome\Extensions" and "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Edge".
