You could try to narrow down the differences between the laptop and the 2 desktop computers.

Things you could check and narrow down yourself to see if you can come up with some possibilities for the problem. (The things are mention aren't just random things. For example, the user account details could affect encryption and decryption of Opera's passwords. Other things might expose a bug in Opera like the language you're using.)

Windows version and build? Open a command prompt, type ver and press enter.

Do you have a password set for your Windows user account?

Is your user part of the Administrators group or just Users? Open a command prompt, type net user yourusername and press enter.

Is there anything totally different with the password you use on the 2 desktop computers? Are they way longer and or have some chars/symbols that the laptop does not?

Are you using your Microsoft account to log in on any of the computers?

Regular Opera or Opera GX or Opera Beta or Opera Developer? What version? Where is Opera installed, where is its profile, and where is its cache folder? Are you using the 64-bit version of Opera or the 32-bit version? Goto the URL opera://about it will tell you all that. Do you have Opera installed on another drive? Are you running the same Opera on an external drive on all 3 computers?

What Anti-virus and any other security software do you use? The 2 desktop computers the same and the laptop different?

Do you use Opera Sync on each computer? Are they all syncing to the same account or do the 2 desktop computers sync to a separate one? Are you syncing passwords? Syncing settings? Do you remember which Opera logged into your sync account first? Are you just using your Opera account to for encrpytion of Opera Sync or are you using a custom passphrase? Do you have any mobile devices also syncing to Opera Sync account?

Do you use all the same extensions in each Opera?

When's the last time you uninstall and reinstalled Opera on each computer? When's the last time you started with fresh profile and cache folders on each computer to start over without copying over and or importing anything back in?

Have you checked your system files on your 2 desktop computers? Have you checked your drives on the 2 desktop computers with https://crystalmark.info/en/software/crystaldiskinfo/ to make sure your drives are still good? Did you check your filesystem with chkdsk on the 2 desktop computers (see the Windows 8 and newer section down the page at https://www.makeuseof.com/tag/stuck-chkdsk-use-fix-right-way/)?

Time, date, time zone and daylights savings time settings the same on all 3 computers?

Using the same language/locale on all the computers or are the 2 desktop computers different?

I'm about ready to delete Opera.
I rely on saved passwords and today I've come in to find the stupid browser has updated, and in the process deleted all passwords it was holding.
I can't get into ANYTHING and it's pretty much cost me an entire day of trying to reset every password I need for work.

How the heck do I stop the auto updating, and how can I get my passwords back.

I'm on Windows 10 Pro, 64 bit. Build is 19041.1415

Firefox, Chrome and Vivaldi have not lost any of my personal passwords. This issue is specific to Opera.

I wonder if this would help:

Download the Opera installer, launch it, click "options", set "install path" to a folder named "Opera Loses Passwords" on your desktop, set "install for" to "standalone installation", uncheck "import data from other browsers", and install.

In that Opera, create some dummy accounts on some sites, log into them and save your passwords.

Then, when you hear about a new version of Opera, goto the URL opera://about in this Opera and choose to update.

If you can get that Opera to destroy your passwords on update each time, you can then zip up the whole installation and send it to Opera to analyze. Maybe they can see something obvious.

It might even help to make a copy of the whole installation before the update (where you then rename opera_autoupdate.exe in the copy) and zip that up too so Opera can compare the before and after installations. Opera won't be able to see the stored passwords in the non-updated copy because they won't be running it on the same system and user account as you. But, they still be might able to se what went wrong.

I can confirm this bug as well. Happening for a few months already. Didn't reported myself.

For me, I just reimport over a prepared file with passwords after each buggy Opera autoupdate.

Has anyone reported this bug into Opera bugtracker or not?

I'm so sorry for you 😞
Also have been in such a situation.

You can take a look at this topic, with the same problem reported, maybe you find there something usefull -https://forums.opera.com/topic/51905/constant-updates-causing-passwords-lost/

And, if is the case, you can export passwords from Chrome and Vivaldi and to import them into Opera.

@donq It might be possible that something in the updater doesn't handle Пользователи in one or more of:

                              "C:\Пользователи\muRmot\AppData\Local\temp"
                              "C:\Пользователи\muRmot\AppData\Local\Programs\Opera"
                              "C:\Пользователи\muRmot\AppData\Opera Software\Opera Stable"

                              well on Windows 7.

But, another user with this problem is using Windows 10 and seems to be using English Windows.

This is definitely a strange issue though as the updater should only be updating the program files and not really messing with the profile files.

Opera's update task in the Windows Task Scheduler runs as your user and only when logged in if you're using a current-user install. Doesn't seem like that'd cause any access issues with access of the profile file or Opera running as a difference user for a sec during the update. For all-user installs, the task run whether you're logged in or not and as the SYSTEM user. There could be a bug there with the updater. But, I'm doubt that as muRmot is using a current-user install.

Because I don't trust Opera Sync, I'd blame it for this bug if a user is using it and is syncing passwords and or settings. It remains to be seen whether users here are using Opera Sync or not though. It'd still be weird for Opera Sync to booger something up on a version change though.
