Your last message (keyboard problems added) may (not likely, but possibly) indicate some strange windows user account problem - like your Opera runs in different account somehow. Accounts have different keyboard and sound settings (amongst myriad other things).
Looking inside task manager, do Opera processes run under your user account? -

But, since this is two completely different computers, and two completely different operating systems, one of which I have no control over (it is a domain install on a work laptop) I cannot wrap my brain around that it is under another user account. I mean, if you read this thread in its entirety, and get past all the circular logic present, having another user account for Opera would probably be within the same realm of possibility as having the sound turn on for me, but not in My profile. After many hours of curiosity gave way to frustration, which led to apathy, I won't be pursuing this any longer. Having pored through the entirety of the windoze operation system within the limits of my knowledge (which is quite a lot) I just don't see it. The software is all installed in my account, in my OS, and so on. My work computer has no additional user accounts, I got it new. It doesn't even have an active Admin account (although it is present if needed by IT). Of Opera has another user, then there is obviously something very wrong in how it's written, and this sort of rogue behavior isn't welcome on my computer.
Pardon me for saying but this thread is going off into the twilight zone, and it's as though I will ultimately end up having to fix the source code or something completely wasteful like that.
I once was a car enthusiast. When one owns a car, replacing a starter, tires, brakes, its all part of it. If you like the car, replacing the motor or transmission is a possibility. However, I have yet to have a car I loved so much that when someone torches it and it burns the the ground, that I'll fix it. It's just how I feel.
But I did come up with a solution, it's working really well so far.
I uninstalled opera completely from both systems and installed Vivaldi and Firefox as alternates. Firefox was abandoned about 2018 by my last university, and in my own experience it completely stopped working properly at that time. However, maybe the Netscape genes will resurface and it will be good. In the meantime, Vivaldi is quite good, I had forgotten about it until I looked up browser options. I could care less about the finer points of the whole internet experience, but I need to have internet access for my work, and things that I do. When I cannot use a Swedish keyboard, have sound, and a host of other small "issues" it's time to set that burning carcass to the side and start anew.
On a side note, when I clicked on the link in my email, it opened up this thread in MSIE and wow, talk about a terrible browser! Buttons didn't work, script didn't work, It's been a while since I've use it, and I never use it intentionally, now I recall why.

This is a very long thread and I'm not going to read it all, but I have a similar issue.
Most sites work fine in Opera, soundwise, like youtube.
However, GIFs are played without sound, for example. As do many others sound-items.
However, when Opera produces no sound, copying the link to Chrome or Firefox does play the sound. so there is nothing 'wrong' with my PC, my settings, my device, whatever. It is Opera. By now I automatically use another browser.
Most procedures mentioned above seems, no offense, pretty silly to me, when Firefox and Chrome just do the job. I shouldn't walk through dozens of settings to find the cause for one single website (like Soundcloud) or format (GIF). Our national public television's website works fine, except for the adds (blessing). Since there are multiple of those causing the issue it must be something more generic.

I am continuing to follow this simply out of curiosity.
To entertain the people that are supposedly "helping" I followed the steps more to prove a point than me thinking any of the solutions would actually work. I learned decades ago that I could meticulously lay out everything I did, and it wouldn't matter one bit. Once, someone in a forum asked for something that windows generates. It was not a log file exactly, but rather a list of installed software with detail that doesn't matter to most people. This contained a lot of details and was 15-20 pages in length, then asked me anyway what software I had etc. It's an exercise in futility. I suppose if I was a first time computer user with zero background, forums may be helpful but I rather doubt it.
But like fishing, maybe I'll catch something I dunno. My "Madagascar 3" thread in the Roku forums is fairly entertaining and equally fruitless.
More to the point, I wasn't looking to recompile the browser or something equally painful and tedious, but rather "is there a volume control somewhere". Chrome has one, and Opera had one at some point several revisions ago. I was looking for a simple answer, not to solve a highly complicated mystery.

@john-phd I read through this whole crazy thread because I was having the same issue after installing Opera. People were making some absurd suggestion fixes. After not finding a solution I did some more googling, cleared cookies and cache and restarted Opera. That's it. That worked.
Even though it's a new browser, maybe something from importing my chrome settings got corrupted. So there you go. Future peeps looking have a potential solution that doesn't require programmer level knowledge. -

Yeah, I not only dumped the cache, I uninstalled it (completely, even registry entries) and then wiped the containing folders associated with Opera. I rebooted for good measure, and reinstalled. Problem remains. This is why I'm stumped!!

Is no one really looking at this. From what I've found around different forums, this affects a lot of users. Some videos have sound, but it disappears as soon as you skip ahead, others have no sound whatsoever. There is absolutely no useful advice anywhere to be found on this issue, yet it's been a thing for over two years for me at least.

For those of you who are still having trouble with this issue, here is what worked for me. (Note, I am running Opera Version 75.0.3969.218):
Got to Menu - Settings - Advanced. Look under Privacy and Security - Site Settings - Additional Content Settings - Sound - Click on the button to Allow Sites to Play Sounds.

I have experienced this problem more than once in the past, and I am now experiencing it again.
About 3 days ago I was listening to music on MixCloud.com through opera, as I have been for years. Opera is my main browser, though I use many others as well. Suddenly the music stopped. it shows as playing, but no sounds are emitted.
I receive my usual email notification sounds from Outlook. I opened Chrome to the same site, works fine.
I accessed the Windows 10 Volume Mixer which can have app-specific audio controls, no problems there.
The Opera "Additional Content Settings - Sound" -> nothing restrictive there.I've explored all the possibilities mentioned in this thread. Nothing.
My opera://media-internals display looks identical to that of john-phd, with AudioServiceLaunchOnStartup = "Disabled" whatever that implies.
It's pretty weird that one day I'm booming along then whammo, Opera is silent with nothing to correct it.
I like Opera, but I gotta admit that I'm tempted to shift over to Brave as my primary browser, merely because it's working and I can just reopen my 110 tabs there and be off and running again. I haven't seen any real solutions on the web pertaining to this reoccuring problem. sad face.

@bblack4jc This is an easy fix if it works. However, my problem seems to be intrinsic to this browser. The "usual" methods don't work. I may or may not have mentioned your fix already in my thread, but I have done everything including going into the actual code of Opera as much as I am able to to find anything addressing this......
the closest I found was a post from 2011 or 2012, where developer options in Opera had a line (among thousands of lines) to enable sound. This line doesn't exist in new versions I guess. I dislike code for the most part, but I am comfortable tinkering around in it.

I'm not sure if this will help for all, but its worth a shot.
I've had the same audio issue for a bit, after my computer blue-screened and had to reset. I had cleared out my %temp% files, and I had manually ended the process on Task Manager. If you scroll down on TM, there should be one that says "Opera GX Browser". I ended the process, opened up OGX again, and noticed the sound had returned.
Like I said, this may not work for all, but it is worth a shot. Apologies if this does not work, I am not specialized in this type of stuff. -

@john-phd I've had similar problems with my Opera sound playback so I wanted to share what worked for me in solving it. You mentioned having multiple audio outputs and I had ended up with a similar situation when messing around with a selection of audio software and virtual audio cables and the like.
My opera wasn't showing up in the standard Windows volume mixer when sound should have been playing, so I went to the Microsoft Store and installed 'Ear Trumpet' as a 3rd party alternative. Once launched, I expanded the list of sound sources and I could see my Opera sound was being directed to something other than my main speakers, hence no output. Right-clicking on the Opera icon in that list and then clicking the icon with 2 sideways arrows allows you to redirect the output to whatever source you want. In my case it now works again just great, and I can see it in the Windows volume mixer as well once again, so there's no need to keep Ear Trumpet installed if you don't want to.
Hopefully a similar easy fix might have been at the root of your own issue? Or anyone else who stumbles upon this thread looking for answers.

@john-phd I really wish the service were a lot better, It seems like you said everything at least three times. I am having this problem, but as much as I love Opera, I'm just going to have to go back to Google Chrome. It's a shame nothing came of this thread.

@coldwaffle5 yea I all but forgot about Opera, it was short lived anyway, I probably used it for about a year or two. Try using Vivaldi instead, it kinda looks like Opera, however it has a lot more options and settings.

@scav23 In one of these threads I pointed out to people that Windows is capable of adjusting volume for each program separately, and that people need to check Volume Control and see if this is their problem.
-- I know right? It's as if the above (exhaustive) thread was not read. I think I keep track of this for a personal experiment to see what people come up with, and to see if it's ever resolved. It was once resolved, it is somehwere above, in 2011ish, where there was a code hack. It's mystifying how this even happens.
Kind of like my thread on Madagascar 3 in ROKU. It can be traced to like 2008 or 9. Still unresolved. Also unresolved is the Samsung S series light issue. The light is "in use" so the camera and well, nothing works. That goes back to 2006. My father in law was spot on that they don't write new code, they just recycled old bad code and never fix anything.
