@jenabaivab Probably because it has been enabled in stable for a while already.

that flag was an attempt, but things don't seem to have been working

Looks like contradictory. If the feature doesn't work properly, the flag shouldn't be removed.
Not only regarding the flashes, but there's also some UI's elements visible from the previous tab (opened folders, scrolled page, expanded dropdown) while creating a new tab.

@andrew84 As far as I know, the flag wasn't the cause of the issue.

@leocg the flag (feature) was made to fix the issue.

Edit: They demonstrated in the blog the both no flash while creating new tabs and no flash while opening tiles. Check the 'Before' and 'After' demos https://blogs.opera.com/desktop/2019/10/opera-65-0-3467-24-beta-update/

The first part (new tabs creating) works, but as I mentioned above, not ideally (sometimes there are visible elements from previous tabs).
The second part (this topic's issue) doesn't work currently.
What they are doing is removing the flag and that means they think the feature is fully stable and workable and they don't care that actually this is not.

@andrew84 If the feature is fully implemented, there is no reason to keep the flag. if there are bugs, they should be reported and they will try to fix them.

And since it works when opening a new tab, as you said, I guess it's working as should.

@leocg the flag works for me now as well. But, it's not available in v71, and it isn't implemented in the browser either. I tried using Beta. Couldn't do anything to solve it.

It should work like on their demo.
Since the issue (flashing) refers also to Chromium engine itself I can't blame only the browser, but I guess they could fix the previous's tab elements visible for a moment when creating new tab because this is not a flashing issue and directly refers to the 'shared' page feature (and was reported many times).

@andrew84 I don't know man, on my windows laptop, I use Chrome, Brave, Vivaldi, Edge Chromium and Opera. As of right now, only Opera is giving me trouble in this regard.

@jenabaivab try creating new tab in Edge or in Chrome (with enabled wallpaper on start page in light theme), I have a white flash every time a new tab is created.

@andrew84 I did try that today, and I never saw this issue with any of them. Although they were in dark mode. I don't see any logical reason why I would use light themes and ask for dark transitions.
Having that choice is good, but I don't think that should be the first priority for dark transitions, that is to make it compatible with light themes.

                          alt text

                          Add
                          the same on Chrome
                          alt text

@andrew84 I may be wrong but I guess that elements of previous page being visible while opening a new page is for avoid the flashing.

@leocg elements are visible only if page was opened using these elements.

For example, I scroll down start page and open a new tab, I don't see previous tab.
But if I scroll down and open some bottom's tile or News's tile (in current tab), when I create a new tab I see how this tab 'jumps' to top.

The same is with folders, I can open a folder with tiles on start page and leave it opened, after I create a new tab I don't see the opened folder.
But If I open some tile from the folder and then create new tab, I see the opened folder for a moment while creating new tab.

@andrew84 These 2 are very different actually. The one on Edge is due to the ntp.msn.com start page. If you remove that from start, you can easily avoid the flash.
With chrome, the wallpaper causes issues. My theme from the web store already has an inbuilt wallpaper, and I don't see any such flash.

@leocg Meaning the white flashes while opening web pages is still present, and the Shared Start Page flag is missing. Basically a dead end.

Indeed, that's why 'shared start page' was implemented in Opera(you can set any wallpaper and no flashes occur when creating tabs).

Correct engine's work is when no flashes occur, doesn't matter with or without wallpaper, it works in FireFox this way and it worked in Opera too some time ago without any flags, until some changes in Chromium.

@andrew84 Probably, but at least there is a way in other browsers to fix it now. If it was introduced as a fix, I think the flag could have stayed for a bit longer, can't use beta now because of that. BTW, the flag causes an increase in startup time of the browser too. I thought my system was fried, but I googled a little, and I saw an article asking people to disable that flag for a much much quicker startup. It's like pick your poison. 😕

@jenabaivab It seems to me that shared start page is for when you open a new tab. And it seems to be working based on what I've read here.

@leocg If they demonstrate a tile opening without the flash, it refers to tiles too. And it worked for me too like on their demo until 67 version if I don't mistake, since the 68 it was broken again.
