Hello there. I have been switching from firefox to opera recently and I can say i've been enjoying this new browser a lot !

There is one problem ruining it for me though, the fonts are literally killing my eyes.

Here are some comparisons with firefox for exemple

      https://puu.sh/wwxRZ/a3808d18f1.png the toolbar

on a famous french forum, here is what I get

      Firefox: https://puu.sh/wyhnp/a5081814ac.png

      Opera : https://puu.sh/wyhku/e1347cb0a5.png

      The google search " Opera " 😃

      in opera : https://puu.sh/wyipB/97dd518ad0.png

      in Firefox : https://puu.sh/wyir8/040a30b99c.png

How can I solve this ? It's really hurting me and I don't want to stop using Opera just because of it, it's such an amazing browser.

Thank you in advance, I hope to see good answers... 🙂

The same font is being used on both? Did you try enabling/disabling hardware acceleration?

Yeah I played with the fonts for a while and it didn't seem to be this.

How can I disable hardware acceleration ? i've searched for a while but couldn't get it done

Leo ... (or anyone in the know), I have read multiple posts advising users to turn on or off hardware acceleration depending on the problem. For example ... "Thus the catch 22, on Opera some problems go away when you disable it...and vice versa.".

It's time Opera gets it's act together. Either turn it on or off.

Unfortunately, turning off hardware acceleration didn't solve the problem on my hand 😞

Font rendering on Chrome, Firefox and Edge is much smoother and pleasant to the eye.

Why is text on some sites shown edgy and ugly on Opera 46?

                  Here’s an example article.

                  https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2017/jul/01/volvo-admits-its-self-driving-cars-are-confused-by-kangaroos

Opera on left, Chrome on right, both captured at 150%.

                  https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/s/3hr3hpck5wcgrm9/Opera_Chrome_font_010717.jpg

It’s obvious to the user, but not so easy to capture on image.

If you think it looks the same, go to The Guardian and toggle browsers with Alt-Tab on same text.

                  46.0.2597.32 (PGO) WIN10-64. HWA On.

I read that disabling opera://flags/#enable-font-cache-scaling may help on some font issues.

Don't forget to read the warning at the top of the page.

You may also try playing with opera://flags/#lcd-text-aa and opera://flags/#distance-field-text

The point is; why should we mess around with (super) advanced settings, when ALL the other browsers display site and font mentioned above nicely?

Feels more like Opera should change something default.

It’s not a font issue. It’s an Opera Browser issue.

If you’re standing on a nail, you don’t take painkillers and keep standing on the nail.

You remove your foot from the nail.

Adding extensions or tweaking experimental features to resolve basic functionality is a pill fix, a non-FDA approved one.

It would be just a workaround.

You can't do anything. its because the Chromium engine used by Opera.

                                  Hello,

I tried the various options leocg proposed, and none solved the problem. It made it even worse, so I guess the default options are not that bad 😃

But I'm sure there was no problem with that in previous Opera version. I didn't notice that using earlier Opera, there was no problem with that All starting to mess with latest version, which in my opinion broke more than improve.

Same problem here. I've uploaded a .png showing a screengrab of text from Opera and Vivaldi. The Opera characters look terrible.

                                          Fixed, thank you Opera!

Site mentioned as example above looks perfect after today's stable update.

I also love the small elegant tweaks on design elements in browser and the longer closed tabs list.
