You don't need an extension.
If you navigate to some webmail site, the site will tell Opera that it can handle mailto links so Opera will ask if you want to use that site as your mail client. If you say No, then you will continue to use whatever is your default mail client.
If you go to Default Programs in the Control Panel, you can see what Windows is using as your default mail program.
In Opera, you could go to Settings and disable protocol handlers to prevent Opera from asking you to make Gmail your default mail handler. Though I'm not on my desktop right now and can't look up where exactly - just type "protocol" into the search box to find it.

I am using Win 7 Home Premium and the default mail program is MS Outlook but I thought that was separate from individual browsers.
I use Hotmail, Yahoo, and Gmail with Opera. However, Gmail was the only one that asked me if I wanted to use it to open all email links (via a pop-up) but I clicked Block and opted out of it.
I do not know what my default mail program is in Opera, which is why I wanted to know 'how' to navigate to it; I cannot see it listed under Settings->Protocol Handlers (and no results are found when searching 'Protocol Handler'), unless I am missing something.
You lost me with searching 'Default Programs,' Am I clicking on 'Set Your Default Program->Click Opera->Choose Defaults For This Program?' For Opera, Mailto:' shows unknown application but Firefox does not show a mailto: and I cannot see a mailto: for Win 7.

I went into Default Programs but 'Mailto:' is not listed under Protocols so I am wondering if it is hidden. Since I have never 'changed' it, I always figured that the default was MS Outlook.
I open Hotmail, Yahoo, and Gmail with Opera. Gmail has only asked me once if I wanted to open all email links but I blocked it. When I go into the Firefox settings, 'ask every time' is selected but I cannot find the Protocol Handler setting in the 'Advanced' section of Opera.
I clicked on 'Set Your Default Program->Click Opera->Choose Defaults For This Program' and it shows Mailto:' with an unknown application and it is unchecked. I also use Firefox but it does not show a mailto:.

Clicking on a mailto link in Opera will load the default mail client on the system.
However, a site can ask to be the default mailto client for links inside Opera. If you approve this, the site will show up when you goto the URL
opera://settings/handlers. However, if you click on the 3 dots next to the site in there, you can choose to set it as the default mail client. When you do this, Opera should pop up Default Programs in Windows where you can then set Opera as the default mail client for the system. When you do that, mailto links outside of Opera will load up in Opera and once they load up in Opera, they will then be passed to the website. In other words, "set as default" allows the site itself to be the mail client on the system via loading in Opera. If you don't set the site as the default, then only links inside Opera will use that site. Mailto links outside of Opera will still use whatever client is set in Default Programs.In other words, it's possible to set the default mail client in Windows to Gmail for example by setting it to handle mailto links in Opera and then setting Opera as the default mail client on the system.
Chrome can do the same thing.

Since Win 7 uses MS Outlook as the default email client, does that override browser email clients, do browser defaults override Windows, or am I missing something?

I personally miss old opera where can I manage my multiple inbox inside the browser without any software and for a privacy and security I also set a master password for the browser , that was a such a super interesting productivity feature which I really miss alot.
I don't why they kill that features. Opera team should be rethink about it.

Thank you for the link. It gives me a choice so it is set to 'ask me each time.'
- However, you 'still' have not explained 'where' I navigate within Opera to see the 'ask me each time' setting.
I wanted to check that MS Outlook is the default email client for Win 7 so I went into Default Programs but 'Mailto:' is not listed under Protocols
- Is it hidden or am I missing something? Also, how can I test it (like I did with the Opera link that you provided)?

I am obviously 'still' being unclear!
The link that you provided was helpful but I am not going to check/click on it every time;
Q1. 'HOW' do I check the default WITHIN Opera? You must have gotten the link from 'somewhere.'
'Mailto:' is not listed under Protocols so I cannot check if MS Outlook is the default email client for Win 7. Why is it not listed?

@sporty78 I guess you are not understanding what people are saying to you.
That link already showed you that there is no program set up to handle mailto links in your system, so you be prompted to choose one every time you click on a mailto link.
In that list of programas you need to check the option to always use the selected program if you want to use a specific program all the time.

I want to check the Win 7 default but'Mailto:' is not listed under Protocols.
Q2 Why is it not listed? Is it hidden or am I missing something?
Q3 Can you attach a link to test Win 7 so I can check the default program?
