I thought I had installed the latest 64-bit version, apparently not.

It took a while to find the 64-bit version, which was here:
ftp://ftp.opera.com/pub/opera/win/1218/en/

But as soon as I loaded it up I got a message saying that I'm not using the latest version of the browser and I should upgrade. Following that link pointed me to the standard 32-bit version of the browser, I don't know which version is suggested.

My post above sounds more like a complaint, but my question is not:
How do I enable auto-update to make sure my Windows 64-bit version of Opera is always the latest version?

Currently the 64 bits version for Windows is on developer channel only.

Which is to say, if you install the 64-bit Developer version from the Desktop blog page it should auto update to the following versions when available - but Developer is still considered unstable and thus not really intended for use as your primary browser. Though I've used it for years now and only had a couple of times it gave me trouble.

Whenever they decide 64-bit has matured sufficiently they will graduate it to Beta and then Stable, but note that Developer will never auto update to Stable.
